When Duty Calls, Willie Answers
boblipton23 February 2024
Willie Howard is a guard on sentry duty sent to the mess hall where pretty girls are present to entertain the troops in this soundie.

Soundies were short films meant to be played on a sort of video jukebox called the Mills Panaram. Put a dime in and you got one of ten three-minute movies on current rotation. They were changed weekly, and from 1940 through 1946, more than 2000 of them were produced by Mills or competitors. Most of them were musical numbers. However, there were a fair number of comedy shorts, like this one.

Howard is a now-forgotten dialect comedian. Acts like this one illustrate why.
