- Barrister William Travers is asked by an old university mate Martin Newell to represent him on a charge of murdering his mistress and secretary. He claims to be innocent but that is far from Travers' main concern. He and his wife Jane left London many years before due to a murder case. At that time, they had agreed that he would neither take on murder cases nor would he take on cases in London. William feels obligated to take on his friend's case. Meanwhile, DI Mark Wenborn is upset with Travers who was successful in having a client acquitted and in doing so was able to show that DS Harry Bowman planted incriminating evidence. DI Wenborn is now investigating a murder, that of itinerant farm worker John Jarrold.—garykmcd
