- Every month more than 4,000 babies are born in South Africa with HIV. At the same time around 30,000 adults are infected with the virus and over 22,000 die of Aids. Approximately 40,000 women are raped - every month. The film "Status of Life" accompanies four young women in South Africa's townships and in Lesotho. How does life feel for these women beneath the omnipresent risk of getting infected or becoming a rape victim? How is it possible to live a halfway normal life under these extreme circumstances? Humor is one method, denial another. Their common ground: the hope for a fulfilled life, with and without the virus.
