Synopsis

  • Lisbon comes looking for Jane as the team entertains themselves around the office.

He's in Clarksburg at a fruit stand. A man pulls up in sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt.

He shoots the fruit stand owner and grabs Jane. As he's trying to put Jane in the trunk, the fruit stand owner pulls out a gun and starts firing. Jane jumps out of the trunk and runs. He locks himself in a shack and calls Lisbon, saying he's in trouble. The man breaks down the door.

Later, the entire team is on the site. The fruit stand owner is dead.

There are two witnesses, including a woman who says she saw a sedan with Arizona plates blow by her. Lisbon calls to have roadblocks set up. Hightower says she's calling the FBI.

The man walks Jane down into a basement and cuffs him to the pipes. Jane sees he's bleeding and says he can help him with the pain.

Back at the office, Brenda the PR woman wants something to tell the press, but Lisbon gives them nothing. Van Pelt's boyfriend O'Laughlin is the FBI liaison.

Rigsby and Cho run possible matching Arizona plates.

Lisbon and Hightower argue about what to tell the media. Hightower says they should put it out there.

Lisbon thinks someone Jane put away is getting back at him. She wants them to go through his old cases.

In the basement, Jane's captor comes back, in pain. He asks what Jane can do and Jane starts to hypnotize him.

Suddenly, the man is shot twice through the back. The female witness comes downstairs, holding a gun.

Jane tells her whatever she wants from him she won't get it unless she puts the gun down. She does. She asks if he recognizes her. He recognizes her as Rachel, a 23 year old whose mother died when she was born. She tells him she's going to kill him and fires over his head. "But I'm going to hurt you first," she says. She leaves, saying she has to take her medication.

Brenda the PR woman leads a news conference announcing the abduction and reward. Cho and Van Pelt come up with boxes and boxes of Jane's old cases and complaints on him. Someone calls in to report a car on his land going the opposite direction Rachel the witness said it was with the driver waving a gun.

    She sends Rigsby and O'Laughlin.

Cho busts open Jane's locked desk drawer and finds cough drops and news clippings. She finds something taped to the top of the drawer -- it's a note that says "Stop looking in my desk." Van Pelt laughs, then worries about him.

Linus Wagner, a creepy doctor Jane put away a couple of years ago, calls for Lisbon (Zeljko Invanek from the series premiere). He says he might have info if she'll come talk to him.

Rigsby and O'Laughlin meet with the rancher Mendoza. The car is now totally burned. The witness saw a man in a sweatshirt with the hood up.

The car has California plates and was reported stolen. Rigsby finds a bloody fingerprint on a take out menu in the glovebox.

O'Laughlin snaps a photo and sends it in. It's for Fred Kittle, who as an attempted murder record but no connection to Jane.

In Sacramento County Jail, Lisbon meets with Wagner. He says he's been in contact with the person behind Jane's disappearance. His sentencing is in a few weeks and he's hoping to avoid the death penalty. He wants her to testify, asking for clemency.

He tells her that Jane's trickery can really set people off and right now someone is acting on thoughts like those.

She tells him to go to hell and leaves.

She takes a deep breath in the hall and goes back in. She says if his info gets Jane back alive she'll testify that he helped on a case.

He tells her about an article he wrote about emotional trauma that mentioned Jane. He got a letter from a young woman claiming to be a psych grad student. She was obsessed with Jane and clearly not a grad student.

Rachel comes back down to taunt Jane. She thinks he's trying to mess with him and says he uses people. He says he's sorry about her father. She says he's not yet, but he will be. She pulls out a cattle prod.

Back at CBI, Wagner has told them a woman named Sherry Winger was after him. They know she was the witness, but all her info was fake. Cho recognizes a phrase she used in a letter that they find in a letter from a convict's daughter.

Her dad was Don Bowman, an insurance guy committing fraud. Jane put him away three years ago. He had a daughter named Rachel. Jane made up a letter from her to her dad, in which she threatened to kill herself. It led Bowman to confess.

They find that Bowman and Fred Kittles were in prison together, but Bowman died in prison a year ago.

    They get Rachel's address.

Back in the basement, Rachel tells Jane her dad died of an infection that could have been treated.

    The CBI mounts up.

Jane tells Rachel her anger is misplaced.

The CBI pulls up outside a house.

In the basement, Jane says he's sorry -- sorry that the loss of her father drove her mad. He doesn't regret what he did to her dad because he was a thief and a murderer. She shocks him again.

The CBI busts in, setting off loud alarms. The house is empty, nothing in the basement.

Rachel gets an alert on her phone that there's somebody in her house.

As she's leaving Jane begs her to move the body because the stench is unbearable. She shoves Fred's corpse closer to Jane and leaves.

Jane goes through Kittles' pockets and finds a pocket knife. He goes to work on the cuffs.

They get an address for Kittles' dad.

Lisbon says she wants to check Rachel's file. As she's driving, Lisbon gets a call from Jane's cell phone. It's Rachel, telling her to follow directions or Jane is dead. She directs her to a café. She tells Lisbon to leave her gun in the car and walk away.

She guides her to a gas station. Inside, Lisbon comes face to face with Rachel and her gun. "Let's go see Patrick," Rachel says.

The team is on the scene. Rigsby checks in and Hightower tells them to continue on to Kittles' dad. Rigsby and O'Laughlin arrive at the trailer. They go inside and are greeted by an angry man holding a shotgun. He yells at them to get out, but Rigsby says instead, he has til the count of three before he shoots him in the head.

The guy relents. He tells them he hasn't seen his son in six months, but he recently talked his ex-wife into giving him the keys to the family cabin. They ask where the cabin is.

We see Rachel leading Lisbon down into the basement. She cuffs Lisbon to a pipe. Jane is unconcerned and notes that he smells gas. Rachel says she's burning the place down.

When Rachel leaves them alone to go pour gas on everything Jane shows Lisbon the pocket knife. He's had no luck getting the cuffs off with the pocket knife. He has a plan, but he says Lisbon won't like it.

Upstairs, Rachel hears Lisbon screaming for help.

She goes downstairs to find Lisbon slumped over with a bloody neck and blood on Jane's hand. He tells Rachel he wouldn't let Lisbon burn. Rachel shocks him with the cattle prod and Lisbon, who was faking, chokes her.

Jane goes for the gun, but Rachel gets free and aims it at them. She's about to fire when shots come from behind her. She falls over.

    Hightower comes down the stairs.

Back at the office, O'Laughlin awkwardly checks in with Rigsby, checking to make sure they're cool and saying he did a great job. Rigsby says they are, then stares wistfully at Van Pelt. He tells O'Laughlin not to hurt her, or he'll have to deal with him.

Jane settles in on his couch with some tea. Lisbon gloats a little that they solved one without him. He's not sure getting kidnapped as well counts as solving one.
