Superhero is a Super Film
indiefilmfannc21 May 2011
I attended a screening of this film in April during a Wilmington film festival. There were several interesting short films; some comedy, some horror, some... some I wasn't really sure what it was supposed to be. I had looked in my program to check out the names, and being a comic book fan, this one caught my attention immediately. Superhero. My first thought was, oh great (with very little enthusiasm). It's hard enough to make a quality high budget film about superheroes! A little indie short trying to do anything comic book related will probably be a tragedy. To my surprise and amazement, this little film was very well done. Then, I over heard someone in the audience behind me (I assumed it was someone who worked on it) telling someone how the budget was (without disclosing any of their hush hush info) less than what I pay for my monthly mortgage payments. Superhero had really good visual FX, the acting was absolutely terrific (kids were pretty good, but just being kids can buy a lot of street cred), and the most surprising aspect of all was the script. The story is very smart, touching on an emotional level, and very well structured. The editing was really good, with the exception of a couple of transitions that just seem to need a slight adjustment. The sound quality was surprisingly tight, considering this is where most low/no budget films run into problems, and the cinematography for the most part was gorgeous. A couple of shaky spots in some pivotal moments, probably due to lack of a steady-cam where hand-held had to suffice. All in all, this film is probably one of the best shorts I've ever seen. People in the audience were silent through most of it, with their full attention fixed on the screen. By the end of the film, several people (men and women) were obviously effected by the story. Kudos to everyone involved in making this film. Superhero reeks of hard work, creativity, and heart. I'd love to have a copy of the DVD!

This film illustrates how with even small films SAG can make a big difference.

I viewed Superhero at a Screen Actors Guild meeting in Wilmington, NC. It is an honest, crisp film with a very talented cast. Well directed and the script is a remarkable first effort.

Working with a low-budget SAG contract, Superhero was able to employ gifted and seasoned actors from the Guild in lead and smaller roles. The script is well written and the direction quite good. The love that went into this film shows in every frame. Even the technical aspects of the film are notable given its budget. But in small films, the acting is of paramount importance. Thanks to the seasoned casting options of working with professional union actors, the acting is superb. Arnold and Jurasic, especially, shine.

Kudos. This is a work well done, and should do very well in festivals.

I always love a film that makes me wanting more. Superhero does this. Langley McArol has written what he knows, filmed from his heart and acted from his soul in this insightful short film. Langley seems to have captured human spirit and heart filled moments in this short film. This short is , having almost no budget is well filmed, has a fine cast of actors and captivates the audience with its story. I am always amazed when a writer can do it all, produce, direct, and act. Langley is able to do all of this. I find this to be the works of a great filmmaker. The storyline, cast, filming, cinematography, and editing were surprisingly solid in all aspects, something you rarely see in a short film. Langley used all of his knowledge, talents, and creativity in the making of this heart warming short film. I do hope to see more of his work in the future. Amazing work Langley! Bonnie Martinez
