Springheel Jack vs. a Velociraptor!
Tweekums1 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens in Victorian London where the streets are abuzz with talk of the killer known as Springheel Jack; a carriage passes by, inside it are Emily and her husband Lord Henry Merchant; it is clear that he is not pleased with her. Back in the present day Matt asks Abby to find out what Connor is up to while he and Becker investigate an anomaly in an art gallery. They find a velociraptor which they send back through the anomaly fairly quickly... only to discover that the anomaly doesn't lead to prehistoric times but to Victorian England. A check of the records shows that several brutal killings took place at the time; all attributed to Springheel Jack. Matt goes through the anomaly to try to clear up the mess they caused and here he meets Emily and has a bit of a shock... she is Springheel Jack and she is hunting the velociraptor! If that wasn't complication enough her husband finds her behaviour an embarrassment and is determined to have her locked up in Bedlam Lunatic Asylum. In the present Abby feels difficult about spying on Connor but eventually breaks into his lab but he and April return before she can get out; she will have to be lucky not to get caught!

This episode was one of two distinct stories; both of them exciting in their own way. In Victorian London we had the excitement of trying to catch the velociraptor while keeping Emily out of Bedlam and later keeping her safe from the mob that believed she was the killer and in the present there was the worry of whether or not Abby would get caught; while obviously not physically dangerous if caught it was likely that a relationship the viewer has come to care about could be irreparably damaged. The action was pretty solid although I'll admit I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see Emily take down the velociraptor with the two huge knives she was wielding... I guess that wouldn't be suitable for tea time viewing! Ruth Bradley makes a welcome return as Emily and it looks as if she might become a regular after returning to the present with Matt. While that part of the story was closed by the end it looks as if the dangers of Connors work are just beginning... avoid watching the 'in next week's show' teaser at the end if you don't want to know more about those dangers!
