Learn more- The scrutiny and the spotlight intensifies as the dancers are asked to perform in the round and will receiver two scores: one for performance and another for technical. The round stage is raised a bit, exposing the dancers' footwork more. The dancers will also have to perform to acoustic music, which will make the musicality more difficult.
Kurt & Anna: Rehearsing their sensual rumba, Kurt struggles a bit with the more intimate aspects of the dance, saying that "as a Christian" he's uneasy about it and wonders what his wife will think. Kurt's wife and Anna's husband pay a visit to the practice space and when Anna explains the dance is a "will they or won't they" type of drama, Kurt's wife says it's like when they were dating and Kurt thought "the grass would be greener" with someone else, presumably, and then he wanted her back. He claims he doesn't know what she's talking about. She encourages him to get into it. Len Goodman praises Kurt's hip action, but says some of his footwork is lacking. He says Kurt pitches the romantic side of it "just right." Bruno Tonioli points out that his movement has to flow and be continuous, and says the performance was "more like brothers and sisters, rather than raunchy lovers in the nght." Carrie Ann Inaba says she "really loved the performance." She says it was a good balance between performance with the audience and his partner, but agrees with Bruno on the movements. Technical: 5, 5, 5 = 15. Performance: 7, 6, 6 = 19. Total: 34
Brandy & Maks: Brandy has trouble feeling sexy for the Argentine tango, saying she hasn't been with anybody in six years. Maks figures she's being too rigid and technical, so he takes her out to a bar to loosen her up. She suggests he taker her out more often. Bruno loves the mood of "soft sensuality" and says it was like watching two lovers stealing a moment. Carrie Ann rejoices in the appearance of "the real Brandy," calling it her "comeback night." She agrees with Bruno on some pointers about her legwork. Len says the technique was good, as well as the performance, saying it "was a little bit hot and spicy" for his taste, but he enjoyed it. Technical: 7, 8, 7 = 22. Performance: 9, 8, 9 = 26. Total: 48
Rick & Cheryl: A week after ripping his shirt off, Rick jokes that this time Cheryl will take one for the team and remove her shirt. She says she went to Argentina over the summer and learned the Argentine tango from scratch and she's hoping to bring what she learned to the dance floor. Despite huge cheers from the crowd, Carrie Ann says the dance was "one-dimensional." She says the dance was lacking passion and the size of the stage was difficult for them. Len says the lifts were excellent and suited the dance. He says the legs could have been crisper and sharper. He says it started strong and lost some edge as it progressed. Bruno agrees and says it started like Clark Gable but didn't maintain all the way through. Technical: 6, 7, 6 = 19. Performance: 6, 7, 7 = 20. Total: 39
Kyle & Lacey: A week after getting ripped for his footwork, Kyle has trouble tapping into some sexiness for the rumba. He makes fart sounds in rehearsal. He vows that the judges will be "getting what they asked for," given the constant calls for better technique. Len says Kyle's footwork was much better, but says it was a bit too sharp. Still, he enjoyed it. Bruno says Kyle always plays it well, but agrees with Len that some of it was too sharp and that rumba needs a continuous flow to work. Carrie Ann says she appreciated the tone of the performance. Technical: 6, 6, 6 = 18. Performance: 8, 7, 7 = 22. Total: 40
"The Situation" & Karina: Mike is pretty worried about the steps and timing on the Argentine tango. He wants to prove everyone wrong about him. Karina is looking to up the stakes on the performance side, which will include some big lifts and throws. Bruno says it "was a terrible mess," and adds that it was like watching someone put together a puzzle never quite getting it. Bruno says the mistakes didn't allow Mike to get into a real performance and that although he did the best he could, he "did a really, really, really, really, really terrible, terrible situation." Carrie Ann, "on behalf of all the women," welcomes The Situation's abs to the show. She says she saw improvement, but that Mike's most difficult thing was the walking. Len says, "It was consistent; it was bad throughout." He congratulates Karina, saying she's doing a great job with "The Situation." Technical: 4, 4, 4 = 12. Performance: 6, 5, 5 = 16. Total: 28
Florence & Corky: Florence was intrigued by the sexiness of the rumba, which Corky describes as "a vertical expression of a horizontal desire." Florence says she has no fear of being sexy. They invite Florence's daughter and Corky's son (a guy named Mark), to determine what is appropriate and not appropriate. It makes for some fun moments. The crowd roared at the many steamy moments. Carrie Ann, embarrassed, says, "What just happened? You're Mrs. Brady!" Carrie Ann says Florence proved that "age has no relationship to how sexy and raunchy and dirty you can make a dance," but she thought it went a little too far and she got a little uncomfortable. Len says it "was much better than I expected -- well done." Bruno says they hit all the aspects of performance, but, all told, he's "seen better." Technical: 6, 6, 5 = 17. Performance: 6, 6, 6 = 18. Total: 35
Jennifer & Derek: Jennifer looks to bounce back from a mistake last week and is focusing on technique. She says each dance brings a new set of pain, and her back and foot are feeling the effects of the lifts. "I'm sorry I'm so old," she tells Derek, who brushes the comment aside. They dance the Argentine tango. Their precise moves drive the crowd crazy, and the judges join in. Len says it combined excellent technique and performance, calling it one of his favorite tangos. Bruno calls it "prime time delight," and says they've "done an incredible job." Carrie Ann praises the precision and passion, calling it "a-ma-zing." Technical: 9, 9, 9 = 27. Performance: 10, 9, 10 = 29. Total: 56
Bristol & Mark: A week after now showing she felt it, Bristol is handed the rumba. The 19-year-old mom says she's uncomfortable with it because it's "sexy and stuff." Mark says, "The rumba and Bristol have absolutely zero in common." Bruno says Bristol is technically always kind of clean. She does her moves, but those moves never go anywhere. He tells her to sustain the moves all the way through. Carrie Ann says Bristol has all the makings of being a dancer, "but there's no effort" and she feels like Bristol is dancing only for Mark. Len chides Mark for having Bristol rip his shirt off during the dance. Len says he wants to see "more we and less me" in their routines. Technical: 6, 6, 6 = 18. Performance: 4, 5, 5 = 14. Total: 32
Audrina & Tony: After moving to the top of the leader board, Audrina sets out to prove it was no fluke. Audrina struggles in rehearsal with the space limitations of the small, round stage. Tony works her through some acting drills to nail the role of the seductress in the Argentine tango. Carrie Ann says she enjoyed it, but points out some lack of energy at Audrina's ankle. She also says Audrina's dismounts were sloppy on some of the lifts. Len says the routine and lifts were good and clever. He says he didn't get the feel of the Argentine nightclub rawness. Bruno says it wasn't bad, technically, but she didn't point her feet, which took away from sharpness. Technical: 8, 8, 8 = 24. Performance: 8, 7, 7 = 22. Total: 46
