An up-and-coming young boxer dies during a bout with a past-his-prime older boxer. An autopsy reveals that he was drugged, and the investigation reveals a number of people who wanted him dead.

A K.O. turns into a D.O.A when up-and-coming boxer Curtis 'The Kid' Conlon suffers a blow in the ring that sends him to his death. Everyone wanted a chunk of The Kid's potential, so who would kill the golden goose? The team will have to adjust as a new Sergeant walks into Homicide. But this superior officer is no stranger to them. Matt Ryan has just gone up a step on the police ladder. His appointment is set to change the relationship between long-standing colleagues and mates.

Now known as Detective Sergeant Matt Ryan, Matt returns to Homicide just in time to lead an investigation into an up-and-coming boxer who dies in the ring, poisoned by special chemicals. A few background checks leads to an abundance of suspects, including over-the-hill "tomato can" Benji Pha'alonga, a questionable bookie, his former-boxer father, his best mate, his wife and his neighbour, but tying the opportunity to the motive proves difficult for the team - but maybe a questionable $10,000 bet on the victim to lose may lead to some answers.
