Tom and Liz and Kathy too
This raw, romantic drama from the UK was quite explicit for its time - 1989, just as the Thatcher era ended (she resigned from Number 10 in 1990), but several years before New Labour took over in 1997 under Tony Blair. This along with The Men's Room (1991) and The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1986) comprised the the British modern trilogy of sexual dramas (with a high level of explicitness to boot).
Here you can feel the industrial nature of England, kind of like the 60s kitchen sink drama A Kind of Loving. As one of the reviewers stated, the premise isn't that unrealistic...the older man having a passionate affair with a younger woman. Happens a lot in politics and business.
Two scenes stood out and involved references to food. The first was where Tom is unsure why the much younger Kathy would be interested in him. Tom said in a self-deprecating manner that he wasn't "lean cuisine". Another scene was where Tom disdainfully looked at the mushed peas dinner his wife Liz prepared for their meal.
