The title of Kate's script, "Lovestained", is a reference to EPIC Production's previous film, a short entitled "Gunstained". There are other references to "Gunstained": Chris Dimoulas, who plays the gunman in the Annihilator film who is shot in the head, also appeared in "Gunstained" as a criminal who is also shot in the head. Bryan Payerl, who plays Clive Pierce in Out of Focus (2010), is one of the leads in "Gunstained".
On set, the characters in the "Lovestained" crew all had comical names they were referred to by, though none of them are listed in the credits: Jake Weingard (the camera op played by John Schneider), Rufus Beatus (the sound guy played by Trev Campbell), Mike Chewey (the other sound guy played by Isaac Leggett), Dale Squeetus (the grip played by Pat Fallon), and Francis Clapstick (the slate guy played by Alexander Boruff).
