The curse of a comedian
stensson22 April 2012
Few knew him abroad, Dirch Passer. But he's a legend in Denmark. He died at 54.

We follow his stage life and maybe it's difficult for a foreigner to understand his fame, because the texts he performed weren't really funny, but rather vulgar. But Passer was loved, not understanding why.

The main scene, which is also very touching, is when he performs "Mice and Men" and the audience laughs. Passer starts to cry for real, which makes the audience laugh even more. That's the curse of the comedian.

He worked and also drank himself to death. But it's more a film about the conditions of Passer, not the conditions of those who are expected and believed to be funny.

Dirch - what a story!
Babes-221 September 2011
I went to see the Danish movie Dirch last night having heard mixed reviews ahead of my visit.

As the movie passed, it sort of 'grew' into this fascinating insight story about a great but very shy and insecure comedian who lived his life upon the expectations of others. He was simply unable to say 'No'. His insecurity incessantly made him chase the applause of the audience and his surroundings, and his shyness prevented him from gaining the security and support of close relationships.

All this affected his family life, his work, the friendship with his best friend and fellow comedian Kjeld and - not least - the quality of his all too short life.

A strong and sad but also beautiful movie with absolutely amazing performances by most actors but especially Nikolaj Lie Kaas in the role as Dirch!

NOT what I was hoping for
hal-901021 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As my headline states this was a big disappointment (at first, read on). Not because of its acting, or production value and not because of its way of telling the story. All done very well, which is why I give it a pretty solid score. But simply because of the story it chooses to tell.

Dirch Passer was a giant amongst midgets. He had a unique talent shining above almost anyone he ever shared the limelight with. Seldom do we see this and as few states elsewhere; he is the greatest comic ever produced by Denmark and to this day one cannot help but feel his magic when watching him. Even in the poorer movies, of which there are many, Dirch somehow radiates through them all. I salute him, and I was hoping to bask in his magic once more when watching "A Funny Man (2011)". I wasn't that lucky.

It is not the kind of movie that leaves your mind, it sticks and pricks... and grows.

The movie surprisingly focused solely on his stage career and not at all on his movie career, which is impressive by any standards (averaging more than 3 movies a year). And in doing so, I suppose we must accept that most of his life is left out – like his partnership with another great Dane (Ove Sprogøe). It was a shame not to tell his story more broadly, as many of us became fans from his persona on the silver screens rather than from the backseats of the theaters.

I was also surprised to how much Kjeld Petersen got of the screen time. Until this movie I did not realize his importance in Dirch's life, and I get the feeling that the movie overdid his importance a bit.

Ultimately, it chose not tell the story of Dirch Passer's life, but rather his struggles in life (where Petersen perhaps was an extraordinary catalyst).

Really, the movie showed us a drunk, a womanizer, a weakling... even a coward and I assume all of these traits are flip-sides from an extraordinary life constantly on the edge. The movie did to a lesser degree show us his good sides, and not much of the genius we all know and love. I resent this and it opted me to firstly dislike it in great roar.

But upon contemplation, I digress by saying that perhaps this was actually okay. His genius is still there for us all to enjoy, however the darker side less so. And the movie did give me a closer and much appreciated look into this kind giant's soul.... so, in the end I still say that it did not give me what I was hoping for, but perhaps it truly gave me what I needed.

Great performance by the actors and a good insight in Dirchs private life.
lars-140-47977523 August 2011
A good film with wonderful performance by the actors. I could see the person Dirch through the actor Nikolaj Lie Kaas. I had some problems by placing all the characters in the film. But it might be because of my lack of knowledge. The film is giving a great picture of what it really takes to devote your life to entertainment. What the cost could be in your private life. It also gives you insight in that amazing friendship between Dirch and Kjeld. I felt that i was brought back to the 60's and 70's. After seeing the film I feel that i have a better insight in Dirchs private life and not only the funny side that we all remember him for.

Great movie
df-199-99490310 July 2012
I am also a Dane and I really liked it, especially Kaas performance. I could really see Dirch in him. He portrayed the external pressures from managers, co-workers, family and friends beautifully, but his internal pressures really shined. Like a dog chasing his tail, never reaching and running faster and faster, without knowing why.

And I loved most what Dirch did. Cant really say that he was vulgar as such. They included (for me) the most important part Hoppegyngen, on youtube.

Its not a perfect movie, but all in all well worth the time and money to go see it. I would see it again.

Oh Copenhagen
alphahumphrey-5484721 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Based on the real life of an actor that died in september 1980 on stage making a parody on the famous singer Kim Larsen that died last year. Dirch made famous songs and sketches, and starred in over 100 of Danish Blockbuster comedies that only can be understood if you was raised around Copenhagen like me in the 1970's.

"Dirch" or "A funny man" is a film about the life of the danish actor, singer, comedian and person, Dirch Passer
belthazordk30 August 2011
This is the film, about the tragic life off stage, of one of Denmarks biggest actors ever. We start off in this film, after Dirch has gotten famous, this adds to the films concept by portraying the tragic side of the man, instead of showing us his life. There are many actors, through out the 50's, 60' and 70's who worked with Dirch, who we will only see briefly in this film, because this is not about them, but about Dirch. For a person who doesn't know much about the danish actors, all these people will look merely like extras, but for those who knows the roles, the films and the roles that Dirch has played, most of these people will give you the "ah he/she is..." thought fairly quick.

Watching this film, my biggest concern was the fear of it being a documentary, or it showing loads of clips of what Dirch did, instead of the actors, this is NOT the case, no clips, no documentary and nobody telling us a story about the man. Instead the film shows us the story, while still managing to put in some funny numbers that Dirch was involved in while alive.

The thing that really struck me, as a viewer, was the way the film shows the issues that Dirch dealt with, and really portrays how he was easy to sway in a given direction, and how important Kjeld Petersen was to his life.

A must see, if you are a fan of Dirch Passer, like danish films, ever wanted to see the backside of the lifestyle of the rich and famous, or just want a great story, that gives you everything from laughs to tears.

Yet another depressing danish movie
krycek1910 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Dirch is not a very good film.

All though I'm a dane, I was only 6 years old when Dirch Passer died so I did'nt follow his career and I do'nt consider him to be funny.

The movie about his life fails on all levels. And here is why.

Nikolaj Lie Kaas, does not look anything like Dirch. Which makes it hard to believe in the character.

The movie focuses only on his stage-career, as if that was the only thing he did. Dirch made many movies, besides from his stage-comedy.

Dirch had children with several women. Who he had which children with is not described very well. And the actresses playing those women do'nt do a good job. Especially not the one he has his second child with. Badly played by Laura Christensen.

Dirch is described as a clown. Also in his personal life. A guy who never really grew up, because people would'nt let him. And I do'nt think that portrayal is fair to Dirch.

The ending is really stupid. Dirch dies on stage, which he also did in real life. But then after he is dead, we see a stage act with his stage partner Kjeld Petersen which is suppose to be a way to say goodbye to him, instead of just watching him die.

The movie is extremely depressing like all danish movies are and it only focuses on the negative parts of Dirchs life.

It is a pointless and unnecessary movie.

Avoid it, especially if you don't really know who Dirch was. The movie wo'nt make you any wiser as to who he was.
