A girl observes dwarves digging in the woods. They vanish in a puff of smoke and she is transported into a fairy realm where she observes such mysteries as molten golden transforming into coins and figures mysteriously appearing to represent aureous wealth.
This Pathe short subject from 1908 lacks any other credits, but it is clearly in the style of Georges Melies. It makes use of many of the camera tricks popularized by that film pioneer, including running film backwards, stage magic and so forth, but mostly it is a pageant to the glories of gold; in fact, it ends with a series of large gold coins of the European realms. Although the copy I looked at was beautifully tinted -- almost certainly by Pathe's stencil method -- it was already old-fashioned by the time it came out.
