From producer/director Ava DuVernay (whose last effort, the Bet documentary, My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women In Hip Hop, recently aired on the network) comes the feature film titled, I Will Follow.
The drama, penciled in as the closing night film at this year’s Urbanworld Film Festival (its world premiere), “chronicles a black woman struggling with the death of a loved one as she moves out of the home they once shared. As her moving day progresses, she is sidetracked by a series of personal encounters that trigger grief, guilt and eventually, emotional freedom.“
DuVernay tells me that she shot the film last November, in just 11 days, and describes it as “a mood piece,” taking place entirely in a single day.
“… Not a lot of plot… you watch a woman go through this particular day… the people that cross her path… the feelings that come up…...

I was invited to attend a screening of this documentary earlier this month, here in NYC; alas, my crowded calendar prevented me from doing so. However, it will air on cable TV later tonight, so the rest of us will get an opportunity to experience it.
The documentary, directed and produced by an acquaintance, Ava DuVernay, and titled, My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women In Hip Hop, will premiere tonight, August 30, at 10:00 Pm Est on Bet.
So, even if you never watch Bet, here’s one reason why you might want to tune in
Broadly, the film very frankly, and comprehensively explores the female Mc’s journey in the male-dominated world of rap music, via in-depth interviews with industry execs, writers, and the artists themselves (past and present), including Mc Lyte, Missy Elliott, Eve, Yo Yo, Rah Digga, Questlove, Russell Simmons, and many others.
