Saying the words "Friar's Club" without scaring away millennials who only speak in memes. Making the celeb in the chair feel honored, but just humbled enough to not jump out a window. Showcasing TV-friendly material that has enough foul language to make Quentin Tarantino blush: The comedic roast walks a whole lot of fine lines -- it's just part of the delicate mix of sick burns, underhanded compliments, and unthinkable vocabulary that makes up the cocktail. But sometimes when you shake that cocktail, it explodes right in your face. Pause to remember five roasts that did just that, and had viewers wincing between the laughs all the way.

Let us start by saying that no, we don't have an answer for why Hulk Hogan and George Hamilton were on the dais at the "Comedy Central Roast of David Hasselhoff."
But while they had no discernible connection to the Hoff -- save for being the butt of frequent jokes themselves -- they delivered the dirty jokes written for them reasonably well (though the Hulkster initially blanched at a particularly filthy line about fellow roaster Pamela Anderson). Hamilton put it best: "I'm a classically trained actor, but even I can't act like I give a s*** about these people."
Neither Hamilton nor Hogan, though, was even close to the night's dirtiest jokester. Let's run down a few of the competitors, shall we?
After a (relatively) mild introduction from roastmaster Seth MacFarlane, Lisa Lampanelli led off by targeting Hasselhoff's drinking -- roasts are all about the easy targets, after all: "I...

"David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and Jerry Springer are walking down a boardwalk when ..." Well, doesn't that sound like the setup for a bad joke? But it actually happened along the "red carpet" escapades prior to the taping of the Comedy Central Roast of David Hasselhoff. The show, perhaps the most savage comedy event of the year, airs Sunday Aug. 15 and repeats thereafter. Truthfully, those particular celeb sightings had to be one of the most fascinating births of creative surrealism to come out of the womb of pop culture in some time. But Comedy Central is banking on that. Joining Springer and Anderson--looking smashing as ever in an obsidian gown--for the net's annual skewer fest were comics Lisa Lampanelli (as divine as ever), Whitney Cummins (she's come into her own as comedienne), Jeffrey Ross, Greg Giraldo, Gilbert Gottfried, and...

The "Comedy Central Roast of David Hasselhoff" promises to be a hilarious night. In the preview clips, we have the Hoff insinuating he's slept with some "Baywatch" babes (no surprise there) and taking a shot at Pamela Anderson.
Next an inexplicably shirtless Jeffrey Ross cracks on -- what else? -- the Hoff's drinking. And finally, Hulk Hogan kinda misses the mark with a toilet joke that involves Lisa Lampanelli. Why is Hulk Hogan even there?
The Hulk aside, we think the roast is going to be pretty hysterical. It taped on Aug. 1, but airs Sunday, Aug. 15 at 10 p.m. Et on Comedy Central. The lineup includes the aforeseen Anderson, Ross, Hogan, Lampanelli and also Seth MacFarlane, George Hamilton, Nicole Eggert, Whitney Cummings, Gilbert Gottfried, Jerry Springer and more.
