For a quick look into the origins of Transformers, you could do a lot worse than "Triple Changer". It covers the toyline's importing from Japan, fleshing out characters and back story and producing comics and TV from that - and it's not the celebratory victory lap stuff; these guys offer insight into the property's longevity and show how they went about developing this seeds of this franchise. There's also some nice archival footage to round it out.
At 20 minutes, it's not sweeping, but it's a good jumping-off point if you're curious about the history.
