Depth Study was an interesting animated sales film from the Gene Deitch-era of Terrytoons
tavm29 July 2010
Just watched this Terrytoons sales film for the CBS television network on the Cartoon Brew TV section of the Cartoon Brew site. Directed by Ray Favata for creative director Gene Deitch, this was essentially a promotional short meant to explain the impact television has in shaping the country's positive outlook toward the entertainment and live historical events it presented. Of course, CBS programming at the time is what's shown in clips as to what was considered good entertainment. So much is said of what a positive influence TV is that at no time is it mentioned how it also contributed to the "couch potato" effect of laziness that came to be reported several years later. Still, this was an interesting time capsule and as always, there are many interesting designs from this '50s era put over by veteran Deitch artist Cliff Roberts, not to mention a compelling score by Irwin Bazelon who I just found out had also scored the TV version of "What Makes Sammy Run" that I reviewed here a few months ago. So on that note, Depth Study is worth a look.
