Building Friends for Business was one of Gene Deitch's earliest works
tavm10 July 2010
I previously mentioned that Howdy Doody and His Magic Hat was the first film credited to Gene Deitch as director. What I'm reviewing here is actually one of his initial forays as such without the printed title on screen. He had the help of one 19-year-old named Cliff Roberts for the graphic design that was a much different looking background than the more realistic designs one was used to at the time. Anyway, this was one of those educational shorts from the Jam Handy Organization meant to tell businesses how someone named John Q. Public was responsible for the many good business sense and quality product of the early days of trade and that despite the increasing demand for more of the same for less time, there are still many workers that can still provide some satisfaction for John and his "family" if many of those in public relations just talk about what they do to satisfy those constant orders for the same quality results. So on that note, Building Friends for Business does the job it was supposed to do while also providing another interesting rarity for those curious about the output of Gene Deitch.
