Italian bread and longer shoe laces
jotix10026 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Larry is seated next to Donna, a attractive woman, on the flight to New York he is taking with Jeff and Susie. Larry feels awkward in talking to the woman. All that changes when Larry, after going to the economy class toilet, trips on his shoe lace and lands on top of a man that created a problem with a flight attendant. Donna looks on Larry as a hero that was able to diffuse a bad situation on board.

Jeff and Larry spot Ricky Gervais at a restaurant where they are having lunch. Jeff has been trying to represent the English comedian. This is a great opportunity for doing so. Larry, in a moment of generosity offer to buy a bottle of wine for Ricky Gervais. The gesture is not cheap because Ricky decides on a rare vintage whose bottle is worth 300 dollars.

We next find Larry and Donna coming to Susie and Jeff's dinner party. Larry has brought a loaf of Italian bread, something Susie finds strange to bring to a hostess. Ricky Gervais, who also is a guest, brings a DVD of his "Extra" television hit. Susie is quite pleased. At the table, the couples are separated. Larry sits next to Hank, the husband of an actress. Their conversation turns to be a disaster as Larry asks Hank about his love life, something that Hank tells him is non existing. Ricky Gervais trying to eat Larry's bread makes a comment about how hard is is to break. Hank, getting up to go to the bathroom trips up on his shoelace and knocks Ricky's red glass wine against his white scarf. Hank, embarrassed, offers to pay to replace it. Gervais points out it cost him 500 dollars.

Ricky Gervais, appearing at a play on Broadway, invites Jeff and Susie and Larry to go to the show. He will arrange for their tickets. When Larry goes to the box office to claim them, he is told to pay 200 dollars for the choice seats, which he clearly finds tacky because he was on the impression of being comp-ed by Ricky. The trio goes into the theater. Susie sits on the aisle, which is where Larry wanted to be. As the dramatic play starts, Larry and Susie are fighting for the aisle seat. Ricky's concentration on stage suffers because of the noise.

Days later, Larry and Jeff are again at the restaurant having lunch. Spotting Hank, Larry asks him over. He asks Hank that since he has to pay Ricky 500 dollars, and Ricky owes him the same amount, he wants Hank to hand him the money, which he is about to do, but Ricky arrives just in time to get it, himself.

Larry is seen coming out of a bakery holding another loaf of Italian bread. He watches Ricky and Donna going past him across the street into the subway. Larry follows them, sitting a car apart. Larry looks into the other wagon, where a mugger is trying to get money from Ricky and Donna. Larry goes into action hitting the man with the hard Italian bread, making the mugger flee the scene. As Larry leaves the stunned couple, his untied shoe lace is caught on the closing doors of the train.

Another good episode of the series. Directed by Alec Berg, and written by Mr. David, Mr. Berg with David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer, it concentrates on a couple of annoyances that Larry finds worth exploring. Nowadays most shoes come with extra long laces that keep becoming untied no matter how one tries to securely tighten. The other idea is about what is expected to bring to a dinner. Larry chooses a bread, something that is clearly not the thing to do, but Ricky Gervais brings a copy of his own DVD, as befitting his status as an entertainer.

The appearance of Ricky Gervais was one of the highlights of the program as well as the excellent ensemble play the director gets from this amazing cast.
