Definitely one of the best Chinese cartoon
smiletanxing12 January 2022
This animation is one of the 2021 movies that raised a hot debate. But in my personal opinion, I am What I am is an awesome Chinese movie.

The story is about a weak teenage boy called A Juan, who's also passionate about lion dancing, a traditional Chinese art performance in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume, takes part in the top lion dance competition for the honor and money and his journey of it.

Some criticized it for the characters' appearance, saying it uglifies Guangdong people; some think the Lion dancing learning is too fast and too unrealistic. Well, those make sense in some way, but hey, it's animation after all(not a documentary), we use exaggerations all the time. As a drama/animation, it's nothing wrong when the director puts the focus on the growth of the character rather than discussing how we learn the traditional lion dancing for like 10 years.

The reasons I like this movie are:

a. This movie chooses to tell a story that we aren't that familiar with, which is rather bold a move in China. In most cases, this usually means a bad box office. But this movie conveys a good concept that a good Chinese animation movie can independently discuss local culture and local stories. It doesn't have to be those big IPs like the Monkey Kind(Sun WuKong) or Nezha(Deity), that it can be recognized and appreciated by the audience even if none of the characters are famous.

B. The first half part of the movie is quite relaxing, you laugh with the boys and you look for a master with them. And you laugh because they are funny, the twists are natural, not deliberately designed.

C. The end part is realistic. After A Juan went won first place in that competition, he is still down to earth and went to Shanghai for work. I especially like the part where he already decided to give up but on seeing the competition he just plucks up the courage and goes back to the game. The struggle is impressive and tense.

A Disney-match best animation in 2021
Lightsoncn30 December 2021
Excellent animation! Its whole story, animation technique and the main roles' setting are ranked in the first class. I think it can be ranked in the level of Disney or Pixar. I give this animation 9/10 as it is almost satisfying except for some a little fabricated dialogue lines. Another important merit is this Chinese animation is a realistic one concentrating on the current local Chinese society, without any Chinese legends' background such as Sun Wukong or Ne Zha, which means the comic producers in Chinese more and more independent and powerful.

Some so-called Chinese patriotic audience, trolls actually, said the animation is a humiliation to China because the leading roles have long-small-evil eyes like "The Mandarin" in Marvel Universe. Oh come on! Aren't you too sensitive to ignore the true nature of this passionate movie?

The proper way of defending one's country is to make great achievements with so-called characteristics rather than crying out like a baby or cursing online or accusing that you were humiliated. Characteristics like your appearance are your born nature, nothing good, nothing bad, it is unnecessary to express patriotism or hatred to the country with them, and if others do, just ignore them because this is stupid nonsense. Think about the story of the label "Made in Germany", which was first used to mark the poorly-produced goods from Germany because of their lower quality. However, German people tried their best and later made the label became the mark of best quality. See? Did German cried and accused that was a humiliation to Germany? No, of course not, it can only be useless. Only by hard-working and making higher achievements can you change the way others comment on you and eliminate the so-called "humiliation".

Chinese cartoons
v-341902 January 2022
Among the few Chinese cartoons that can be evaluated as the best, it has been severely polarized in China due to squinting. I don't quite understand why the Chinese people are so tolerant of the quality of the picture, the soundtrack, the plot, and the thoughts that are not as good as the cartoons of this anime? When a superstar is rising, are we more fair and objective?

best Chinese movie/cartoon in a long time
zhanghaiping130 January 2022
Storyline is clear and concise, music is good, characters are vividly impressive. 10 out 10 in my mind. The product is impressive in an era when hundreds of garbage movies are flooding in the market just to make a quick buck.

An easy to understand and yet powerful anime movie
impodream-201411 March 2022
The Music/Songs: There are many original songs composed for this movie, they fit in each scenes very well and resembles the emotion correspondingly. I appreciate those songs even better by reading the lyrics, those words came from down-to-the-earth people's lives and reflects ordinary people's fighting spirit when they denying their destinies.

The screen shots/storyboard: Since this is an anime movie, there are many astonishing scenes with soothing great nature, or powerful actions, or emotional twists of our protagonist's life. I love how these are written down as cut-scenes and directed by the director, and eventually how they are presented in the movie.

Many scenes touched me in the heart.

Traditions, nostalgia and culture: You can get the awe-inspiring scenery from a Chinese traditional village, their life styles in the 90's and the beautiful nature. And you also get the cold and the ruthless from arising big cities where the poor are struggling with lives. These are the common memories of a whole generation.

Tiger dancing is a tradition that comes down from many generations before us but is also fading away with modernization of China. Here you can feel both the passion and sorrow from this transition.

The plot: It's really an easy story, there is no sideways to understand the plot and I think this makes this movie a no-brainer to recommend to anyone who wants to learn a little more about a Chinese tradition and an inspiring story of a child who defies his weakness and stands up as a man.

Realistic themes rarely seen in Chinese Animated Feature Film
niaokuxia11 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Realistic themes rarely seen in Chinese Animated Feature Film On this Tuesday I just watched the Animated Feature Film "I Am What I Am" (or "The Lion Dance Boy") directed by Sun Haipeng and screened by Li Zelin. It was so amazing. It told a wonderful story with 3D animation technology that does not lose the international standard. The story finally no longer hold art and animation production technology back, but complement each other.

The character modeling is not the big eyes commonly seen in American or Japanese animation, but a non-cartoon realistic style, with the courage of aesthetic innovation, and the effect is actually good; then the scene of this film is as realistic as the real world, as if I'm watching a real movie; the story is not an IP adaptation of a mythical story, but a purely original realist theme, which is really rare. The only IP may be the theme of "lion dance", a traditional Chinese culture. The movement of the lion dance is lifelike, just like it was actually shot.

The key point is still the story of this movie, which is very soulful. Small patato like "salted fish" do one thing through their own efforts. Although this kind of story has been told countless times in countless movies, but this kind of faith that is not afraid of losing and not accepting fate is still very attractive, so appealing, very enthusiastic and inspiring. At the same time, the film's perspective also focuses on the lives of left-behind children and the bottom-of-society workers (the so-called "low-end population"). The silent race in the online world is already very humanitarian, which should arouse empathy and substitution among more people, which is rarely seen in an animation.

The main creative team is respectable, and this movie deserves applause and applause.

Highly recommend Inspirational story from reality
hooraychining3 April 2022
I feel the same way as all charactors in movie and burst into tears.

The technical level is almost perfect in my opinion, and all the flaws in character modeling are finally understood as the need to shape the characters who are look like ugly, but it feels real, as if the people around me may even be myself.

Overall, this inspirational story of people at the bottom sublimated a legend which give me so many Better than expected, more important, it returned to reality at the end of story which made me more sober instead of dreaming. It made me believe that this story could have happened in reality. Of course, the people at the bottom still need to face the harsh reality. It reminds me: Life is going on as before that is not overshadowed by the passion of Inspirational story.

Extremely clever logic!

And Great fit music! The images and scenes presented in the story are full of Lingnan style (the area near Foshan, Guangdong Province, the hometown of Yip Man). It makes me miss Hong Kong cinema at its best in the 1990s. Unique, fresh and full of tradition.

Delightful to watch

A nice story with a straightforward story plot. Some funny moments but might be insensitive at times, so should watch without overthinking it. Quite like the actions although it might be a little fast. Good show of characters.

Warning: Spoilers
The Buddha's light shines, and the gods can't hear the voice of mortals; With a salty fishy nose, the sick cat also learned the roar of a lion, even though I was embarrassed and curled up under the bed on the third floor. The burning cool shell is wrapped around the realistic issues such as agricultural, industrial and rural areas, left behind children and so on. The workers' observation of describing the group is very detailed. Even if they step towards the insurmountable Optimus Prime, the reality is still very cruel. It is destined to go to Shanghai. The lion's head will remain at the top of the column forever, and cats and dogs and fat pigs will learn to say goodbye to the Buddha. If they don't recognize it, the miracle will be there.

Some poeple say squinty eyes is insulting Chinese,I don't thik so. The image is only incidental,do you guys only look at their eyes when you watch a movie? And it's got a great story. I don't know why you guys care so much about eyes. Although it's got many bad reviews, but still great plot-wise.

Warning: Spoilers
It is obviously a enslavement and Enlightenment film, but it is beautified as an inspirational film. If this film continues to exist, the Chinese people will only be slaves for generations to come.

They're trying to make a thing.
v-3481429 December 2021
Everything is trying to be realistic except for the fat phobia jokes. Did they made this an animated movie so that they can make fat phobia jokes?

This is a...movie?for Chinese kids, giving the small delicate brains the impressions of "we're proud of our culture", "respect the working class people", and "a feminine boy can become a strong male male!".(yeah feminine boys there's no need to be incels, just don't give up)

But the fact that it's for kids made me really uncomfortable about the fat-phobia jokes.

Every time someone laughed, while I was watching, it was because of some joke made out of the fatness of the fat character.

I started thinking about whether this kind of media made the younger me see fat people as animated characters, that their behavior are supposed to be funny, whether the younger me thought fat people need to get rid of their fatness to live a normal life.

Think about the kids, ffs.

Well, to be accurate, there's one time the kid sat behind me was not laughing at a fat joke.

It was a scene that was supposed to generate a sense of inspiration, but the momentum of the scene was really weird, and while I was feeling confused, the kid might thought"oh time to laugh again", so, not their fault at all.

Best Animation of 2021 without a doubt.
amadiicardi5 September 2023
Where do I start from?

The characters and the care put into every detail of their design is breathtaking.

Basic story on paper but the execution is extraordinary. Light-hearted, inspirational, emotional and motivational. The music did not miss a single beat even down to the lyrics, it captured every moment and gave life to it. The cultural significance and depiction also plays a part in why this animation is special.

This is an animation worth seeing if you can get through the first 5 minutes which I admit took me a while, but I finally saw it and the only thing I regret is not seeing it sooner. Hope to see more of this from the Chinese.

Best chinese animation so far
gatotjakatimur22 November 2022
This is the best chinese animation i have ever seen so far.

The story is so touching. It's from zero to hero with a lot of pain and building up character.

The animation is so rich, full of details. Their faces are so chinese, and the environment is so beautiful.

The soundtrack is perfectly chosen, like the famous song from legend of condor heroes. Anyone seen legend of condor heroes will recognized this song.

And the ending is so inspirative. Is it predictable? Well i may say it is unpredictable ending. And it is very nice. Truly nice. I expect there is a sequel from this movie. Maybe with a different center character.

Overrated.
Aquila_Galaxy28 July 2022
Despite the problem of the mean look of the main characters, the whole plots are Chinese charastically illogical(Like those of Wo Men De Dong Ao). I can't even tell the movie is an inspiration or satire.
