Indie Sequel Honors Local Town
torib-2938114 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's good to follow up on Ellis Martin who you meet in 'Upstate Story' navigating the pitfalls of being in your 30s struggling with health issues, co-parenting, & job security while going back to his hometown for a scouting job bringing back nostalgic memories of the past along with a new appreciation for the future! Everyone can relate to this story & find something of themselves in watching Ellis. Of course a scene dealing with amateur porn is ridiculously funny! I found it fun to see the town of Saratoga Springs, NY through Ellis' eyes and his memories of growing up there. Shaun Rose brings catharsis to his character developed in 'Upstate Story' and an undoubtedly wicked sense of humor with a touch of tragedy to bring about such catharsis. Growth is never linear as indicated in this movie but taking the first step towards any self-improvement should be cause for celebration!

A solid sequel

Not often do I get caught up in sequels, but this is a very fitting and solid experience considering what came before with 'Upstate Story.' I loved the very limited manner in which it was filmed. The camera doesn't move much and it doesn't become a distraction when you consider the story being told. The black and white photography is especially nice, but so is the color and sepia footage. It makes for a nice blend. The writing and voice over is the best part. It all sounds very real to how people think or talk. The dry delivery by Rose makes it all the more special. Easy to connect with as a viewer too. It's definitely one of the finer small indie films out there. I have a feeling there will be a follow-up and I can't wait for it.
