- A young blind girl learns the true meaning of love when she encounters the man who will become Saint Valentine.
- A young girl named Tess struggles at school due to being new and unpopular in her class. She is due to give a presentation about the history of St. Valentine's Day in front of her class but feels unprepared and nervous. Her sympathetic teacher reads her the story of St. Valentine in hopes of preparing her for the project and feeling more confident about the true meaning of love.
In 270 AD, a young blind girl named Theodora, the troubled daughter of a jailer, encounters a nobleman named Valentine who protects her from a cruel Roman soldier and tells her that she is greatly loved by God, being a secret Christian himself. Theodora remembers his words and tries to seek love from her father, but she is treated coldly by him and everyone else she encounters. Later, Valentine performs a wedding ceremony for his servant Lydia and her lover, a Roman soldier named Marcus, but the wedding is interrupted by Caesar's soldiers, who arrest everyone except Valentine for breaking the Roman marriage laws.
In the prison, Theodora recognizes Valentine's friends and rushes to warn him of their impending deaths, which disturbs him greatly. He sends encouragement to them through messages from Theodora and with paper hearts dyed red as a symbol of his love. Theodora delivers the messages and tries to help Lydia and Marcus escape, but they are caught and sentenced to die in the arena. Again, Theodora warns Valentine, and he arrives to offer himself in the place of his friends, who are subsequently released.
Before Valentine is sent to die, Theodora visits him and comforts him, and he tells her more about his faith before explaining the true meaning of love - to lay down one's own life for one's friends. Before he leaves, he prays that God will give Theodora a sign of His love, and Theodora's sight is restored to her, allowing her to see Valentine's paper hearts for the first time.
Back in the modern world, Tess receives a standing ovation from her classmates after giving a stirring presentation about St. Valentine.
