Best dlc ever?
thefoochie14 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I will try not to spoil much, but I will say that this is one of the best dlc's to a game I've ever played. It has almost as much content as the original game and so much to explore. I recommend going to this game blind, without any guides or walkthroughs, so you probably shouldn't read the rest of my review.

Mild spoilers: The main premise of this dlc is that you find a massive ring world called the stranger, hidden by some sort of cloaking device. There is oxygen in the ring world, and a dam that breaks on the 13th minute of the loop.

You learn that The stranger was built ages ago by an alien species that looks like a hybrid of a deer and owl. The alien's language cannot be translated, so instead of finding information from words like you did from the nomai, you learn information from slide shows. This offers a unique experience because instead of directly learning the information, you have to interpret what the images mean.

Major spoilers: The main way to progress in this dlc is by entering some sort of dream world and exploring it. There are two main differences between the dream and the real world. 1. It's super dark in the dream world. 2. The aliens who used to inhabit the Stranger are still alive in the dream world, and will jump scare you if they see you (the jump scares can be really intense). In these dream words you learn more about the origins of The stranger and what the aliens want, just like the Nomai.

Overall, the difference between exploring the peaceful real world and the terrifying dream world make for a perfect gaming experience. It's a 10/10

I will end this review by paraphrasing something one of my favorite streamers said about this game. "The thing about this game that's so special is that unlike most puzzle games where you have to acquire items and abilities to progress, you can beat outer wilds from the beginning. The only thing stopping you from beating the game is knowledge. Instead of having a clear goal to help you progress, it's your own curiosity that makes you advance."

Bought in a heartbeat
timforyt4 April 2022
Once I beat the main game back in february, Outer wilds has been sitting in the back of my mind, rent free. I absolutely loved the main game and it left a hole in my heart after it was over, I couldn't find another game like it. Then July rolled by and probably the most exciting teaser I've ever seen dropped. Outer wilds was back, and it would release in less than 2 months.

2 months go by and the hype is real, it's the 25th of September and I'm refreshing the steam page for the DLC, waiting for it to come out. God I was so anxious about it, I really hoped that it lives up to the hype, after all it was my favourite game of all time.

Safe to say it even exceeded my expectations in most aspects, this is a 100% recommend to anyone who's even heard about this game. Do yourself a favour and play it.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ... and far too difficult
hoytyhoytyhoyty28 January 2023
I nearly had a panic attack when I saw there was DLC for Outer Wilds, and bought it instantly.

EOTE is extremely clever, just like the main game, and the way they have integrated it is gorgeous.

It's aesthetic is magnificent, and the way the mystery unfolds is worthy of the root game. There is some truly haunting stuff in there, and some tricky and clever mechanisms.

But it's just too hard. Once you penetrate sufficient layers deep to figure out what's going on, and get a grip on the mechanics, the time and other limits start to become very, very tedious.

I ended up watching an 'official' walkthrough just to see what happens, and while I was pleased at how far I'd made it on my own, I was amazed by the tiny clues and convoluted paths one was expected to follow to solve the whole thing. EOTE is much harder than the root game, but ... not in a really enjoyable way. Also, combined with the horror dynamics that have been introduced, it goes from sweetly wonderful to bitterly off-putting rather quickly.

But would I recommend it?

Yes of course, but if you're a fan of the stunning, astounding original game you're already aware of EOTE, you don't need me. This review is largely for Annapurna to read. They reached too far, but in the wrong direction, I feel.

Buy it, check it out, but be prepared that unless you have limitless time you are probably going to give up on it at some point, even if you doggedly made it through all of Outer Wilds by yourself.
