Emily Patterson makes reference to the USS Eldridge, implying she was a battleship involved in the Philadelphia Experiment. The real USS Eldridge, DE-173, was a destroyer escort commissioned on 27 August 1943. Decommissioned on 17 June 1946, she was transferred to Greece on 15 January 1951. Decommissioned on 5 November 1992, she was sold for scrap on 11 November 1999.
Ships do not stop engines when in heavy seas. To do so causes a loss of control and allows the seas to push the ship so the seas are coming from the side. This causes the ship to roll drastically and may cause the ship to capsize. Engines are needed in order to keep the ship headed into the seas.
