Say Cheese (#5.18)

Warning: Spoilers
This is fun and light episode about Lily's birthday and how Ted always brings women to all big events and they end up on pictures and then they break up.

I am not even picking anyone's side. First I was very much with Lily. Especially when Robin told about the Japanese wedding and we saw the picture. But then the fact that they have picture from the time Marshall just started dating Lily kind of makes one warm up to Ted.

Barney always looking good in all his pictures was a fun story. Especially with robin trying to get a bad one from him and especially because at the end she succeeded.

I Side With Marahall And Lily
slightlymad2215 January 2015
Plot In A Paragraph: Ted upsets Lily when he brings "one of his random skanks" along to her birthday party. Lily argues that Ted and his many random skanks have ruined a lot her treasured group photos, whilst Ted says Lily is just being a birthday snob!! Meanwhile Robin notices, there is not a bad photo of Barney in all of Lily's photos (in fact he pulls the exact same pose in every picture) so she sets about getting a bad photo of Barney, but it proves impossible.

It is hard to argue with Marshall and Lily on this one, as Ted just turned up at their house with his guest, without even asking them. Also instead of Ted bringing Lily's favourite cheesecake, Amanda (a chef) was going to bake a cake instead. What happened with the cake was ridiculous!! Just his stupid was this Woman?? She was certainly no Dinah in the kitchen!! Ted demanding Marahall apologise to Amanda was ridiculous.

That said the Barney plot was once again a lot of fun!!

This episode really works well

Warning: Spoilers
"Say Cheese" is one of the finest episodes of the fifth season. Where a lot of the dramatic interactions between characters often doesn't work for me, here it does. We see the origins of the friendship between Lily, Marshall and Ted and we see a slow decline in it.

It is difficult not to side with Lily and Marshall in this episode, as Ted's actions are inexcusable. Although the ending, bringing Amanda back for the photo, is a bit of a cheap sell, it does at least make sense...Lily realizes how much Ted believed in her all those years ago, and pays him back for his trust.

Also, this episode is quite hilarious quite often. Neil Patrick Harris is terrific as Barney, and his plot is bizarre and amusing. "Say Cheese" works, because by the end of the episode, we understand the friendship between the TRIO a whole let better. It really is a bit of unexplored territory and strengthens the bond between the three.

Once again, was this necessary to the main story?
In this episode, Ted angers Lily when he brings a random date to her birthday party, so she is forced to remind him of all the other random women he has brought along to important functions, only to discover that they weren't "the Besides that, the group discovers that there aren't any bad photographs of Barney and Robin tries hard to take one.

This is one of the very few episodes of this season in which I could totally emphasize with Marshall and Lily - especially when Marhsall was outraged by Ted's date. On the other hand, Ted was being a jerk in this episode - I didn't like him in most of this season's episodes. Robin and Barney were fine, the storypart with ridiculously photogenic Barney was pretty funny.

The screenplay of this episode was written not very well and some parts in it were dumb, but most of the time this is one of the funnier episodes of season #5. Most actors were good, but I hated to see Laura Prepon again - I hate her role, but I also think she is a poor actress.

So, all in all, this is quite a nice episode while being below the standards of HIMYM season 1 and 3.

Very funny

One of the funniest episodes I've seen in the series. Barney just makes this show. The dialogue in this episode was very witty and I always love the flashbacks.

What HIMYM is. Light and funny and easy to watch. Funny, real, emotional, etc. Not great...and almost an 8, but not quite. But really enjoyable.

This show is worthwhile despite Ted

Ted is an idiot. This show is carried by everyone else outside of Ted. Even voiceover Ted is better than actual Ted.

Everyone hates the Group Photo.
swordsnare31 January 2022
Lily having a whinge about Ted when everyone hates the group photos. Making Ted out to be the bad guy when Lily is horribly self-serving. Calling her birthday Lily-day says enough.

Barney is still the remaining comic relief that this show needs during these episodes.
