Synopsis

  • CBI HQ

Lisbon tells Jane and Rigsby about their new boss, Madeline Hightower. She's supposedly tough as nails.

Hopper Banks Estate Citrus Heights, Cali.

On the scene, they say hello to the security guy, Victor Bandino (Kevin Alejandro), who goes back to San Diego PD arson squad with Rigsby.

The victim is James Smithson, a British citizen who was renting the Banks' pool house.

Jane is intrigued by his lemon grass tea. The victim has a fancy pedigree, but Jane doesn't buy it because he's got a scar on his face and a rich kid would have gotten plastic surgery. He thinks his resume is a fake.

Jane finds a small wooden box under a nearby bed. The others are guessing on time of death when all of a sudden the victim rises up, takes a deep breath and lies back down.

Rigsby later explains this is Lazarus syndrome, his heart caught an electrical charge and restarted. But he's brain dead.

Lisbon and Rigsby walk around the palatial estate. Jane's picking through the herb beds - he claims the dirt under the victim's nails smelled like rosemary. He pretends to find the wooden box in the rosemary.

Hopper Banks' wife Jolene doesn't want to let CBI talk to the 12 year old girl who found her, but Lainie comes out. They ask her about what she found and when she gets upset her dad hustles her off. As she's leaving, Jane pulls the box out of his pocket and asks if anyone knows what was in it.

Then he asks Lainie why her mother didn't want her to talk to them, and the girl clarifies her dad's much younger wife isn't her mother. Jane insinuates Jolene was trying to keep the girl from telling them about her affair with the victim. Jolene throws Jane a "how dare you?" and he mocks her lame defense.

They check out the security footage, which only shows a muzzle flash in the pool house.

Back at CBI, Van Pelt has found that the victim's name was an alias. Rigsby says it's not like Bandino to not fully check someone out.

Jane reassures Lisbon the new boss will be fine, but she says he sounds like the one who's worried. "That sounds perceptive, let me think about that. (Pause.) Nope, I'm not, it's definitely you," he says.

Jane and Cho go talk to Mrs. Blankman, the mom of a student James tutored. Jane excuses himself, saying he wants tea.

He sniffs various citrus scents in the kitchen then puts a ton of lemon-scented cleaner in another mug. He gives it to Mrs. Blankman, who starts when she smells it.

Jane calls out her sense memory for giving away the fact she and the victim were having an affair. She admits it.

Risby and Van Pelt ask Bandino about his background check of the victim. He says he did the best he could do, then says the stress of being a cop was why he quit. He mentions Hopper asked him to get him a gun a few weeks ago for a photo shoot but he turned him down.

Lisbon asks Hopper about it at his gallery. Nearby Jane demonstrates his "mind reading" abilities to Lainie, giving her money for ice cream.

Hopper refuses to take a polygraph test. Jane looks at the black and white noir photos of Hopper's wife and says Smithson was cuckholding him. They don't deny it.

On the drive back, Jane notices they're being followed and has Lisbon make a turn. She asks him if Hopper did it and the car follows them into a cul de sac. They turn around and park in time to see the car stop opposite them. A middle-aged man gets out and tries to sell them life insurance.

Jane says his accent his horrible, and says it's disguised British. He keeps up the ruse for a minute more than identifies himself as Inspector Francis Slocum from Scotland Yard.

Back at the office, Cho can't confirm his story. But Jane is being friendly because he thinks Slocum might know more about the small wood box he found.

Slocum tells them Smithson is Oliver Stans and nine months ago he stole a valuable artifact from the British Museum - a wedding ring said to belong to Cleopatra, given to her by Marc Antony.

He shows them a replica of it. They heard Stans was going to fence it to a dealer in stolen antiquities, Louis Anglet.

He says Anglet has the ring now and he has to get back on the trail. Lisbon isn't letting him go anywhere til they check his story.

Van Pelt confirms Smithson is Stans.

Lisbon and Cho go to interview Slocum and find he's knocked out the guard and split. They find out he is Scotland Yard, but he's off the reservation tracking Stans and the ring.

Just as things have fallen apart, Madeline Hightower arrives.

Van Pelt and Rigsby check out Slocum's Flamingo Motel room. He suggests they try the bed. She notices something peeking out of the heating vent. Rigsby lures her to join him in bed. They're rolling around kissing when a maid walks in.

Hightower is setting up her office when Lisbon comes in to tell her that ordinarily they do a better job. Hightower tells her everyone has bad days. She asks why they were rejected for a search warrant, and knows that Jane insulted Hopper Banks who complained to someone who influenced the judge.

She thinks Jane is a valuable asset, but that Lisbon is in a tricky spot. She tells Lisbon if she can't keep Jane in line, they'll find someone who can.

Van Pelt and Rigsby come back and reports Anglet is also a hit man. But first, Lisbon wants to continue to focus on Banks.

They search his house and find a photo of his wife holding a gun like the murder weapon. He claims it's a prop.

At the hospital, Slocum checks on a comatose James Smithson/Oliver Stans. He finds Jane hiding in the room.

Jane deduces that Oliver is his son. He says Oliver studied Classics and took the ring on a lark. But Jane notes Oliver swapped it for a fake he had on him, it was planned.

Jane understands that Slocum is going to go after whoever hurt his son and lets him go.

Back at the office, Hightower tells Jane what she told Lisbon and that if he messes up, Lisbon is out of there.

In interrogation, Hopper admits to Cho he had a gun, but doesn't know where it is anymore.

Lisbon joins him with internet records and asks him about the ring theft. His phone records show calls to Anglet.

Jane talks to a company, saying he expects what he ordered to be there soon.

Van Pelt finds Anglet has a massage scheduled. They expect Slocum to be there. They stake him out and find both men. Slocum confronts Anglet and the team brings them both in.

Back at HQ, Slocum tells Jane over tea that he just wanted to question Anglet. Hightower brings Slocum a return ticket for the next day and says if he leaves, there won't be any charges. Jane's package arrives.

Hightower passes Rigsby and Van Pelt smiling at each other and is suspicious.

Lisbon interviews Anglet as Hightower watches. When Anglet's lawyer arrives, Hightower notices he's high priced and suggests Lisbon run up the meter.

She sees Jane go in to talk to Anglet. He says he knows Anglet didn't kill Stans, but he bought the ring from whoever did.

Jane shows him the fake he ordered and tells Anglet he's got the same thing. Stans stole the ring, but resold the fake. Jane gets him riled up over how much he paid and Hightower interrupts to inform him his lawyer's there.

She points out to Jane that the evidence points toward Hopper Banks and Jane has just put him in danger. When Lisbon walks in she tells her to get Banks guarded and that Jane's stunt is exactly what they talked about. "Your butt is on the line, Agent Lisbon," she says.

At Hopper's house, Bandino offers to protect him but he refuses. He accuses Jane of riling up Anglet and turning him loose on him. Jane admits it and says they could have held him if Hopper had been man enough to admit he sold him the fake.

Late at night Bandino jumps into his SUV with a bag of money, but it won't start. Anglet comes out of the dark and starts kicking Bandino, demanding he give him the real ring.

When Anglet points a gun at him, the CBI team pulls up and arrests them both.

Back at HQ, Bandino says he did a good background check on Smithson and found he was Stans. He approached Stans about the ring and brokered the sale. He killed Stans because Stans changed his mind at the last minute and wanted to return the ring. He tries to claim is was spur of the moment, but Cho points out that planting the phone and internet evidence on Hopper Banks proves he planned it.

At the hospital, Slocum says good bye to his son. Jane tells him he was right, his son wasn't a thief. Jane gives him the ring.

At the office, Hightower is about to leave when she sees Jane lying on his couch, contemplating. Hightower goes into Lisbon's and tells her she's going to do something about Rigsby and Van Pelt.

    Jane sits up, "She's good."
