Johannesburg, South Africa was primarily settled by Dutch immigrants looking for suitable farmland. Gold deposits found on the site soon changed the focus of the settlement, which was given the moniker "City of Gold". Gold mining still occurs in the surrounding area by forty different companies. The process of gold extraction and ore processing is presented. Mine workers consist primarily of natives who work on short-term contracts.
