Synopsis

  • Fiona and her stitched lip and fake cast wait after class for her teacher, who reassures her she's not in any trouble then asks her how she got hurt. She says the cast is show and tell and her lip got stitched up in the kitchen.

Later, Kevin fends off questions from the teacher over the phone, reiterating that the cast is fake. At the hospital, Mrs. A tells the nurses she's assessing her personnel as part of managing her budget and she's not doing it privately. Zoey rates "good," Thor gets "improving," Sam gets "needs work" and Jackie won't even let her finish her sentence.

"Wouldn't dream of it," Mrs. A says. She tells Sam to shadow Jackie. Jackie tells Mrs. A she does not like him, but Mrs. A does not care. "Shouldn't you be peeing in cup?" she asks him. "Shouldn't you?" he says back.

Kevin calls Jackie about the suspicious teacher and they divvy up daughters. He'll take Grace to her psychologist, she'll deal with Fiona. He tries to talk to her beyond that, but she hangs up on him.

Dr. O'Hara ignores a call from Sarah. Jackie comes for her, asking for a saw and a town car. Plus, leave on the stethoscope and bring her black bag.

Cut to O'Hara removing Fiona's cast in front of her class for show and tell and explaining that if her arm were actually broken it'd be bruised and she wouldn't be able to wiggle her fingers.

Jackie gives the teacher the cast and she and O'Hara return to work.

Back at the hospital, O'Hara ignores another call from Sarah.

She says everythings not great with them right now and invites herself over for a bottle of Scotch and "monkey bits" (buffalo wings).

Cooper sits outside the hospital with an old high school friend, who thinks him grabbing an older lady's boobs and her then dying is hilarious. He asks if he can set her up with a little bit older guy who is nevertheless very cool and into all her "indie crap." She says Ok. Cooper gets beeped for a gunshot.

Inside, the nurses cattily observe a model being wheeled in and assume she passed out from not eating. She tells them she's the gunshot victim.

She has a bullet in her head but it sitting upright and speaking clearly. She was grazed standing on a subway platform.

She recognizes Cooper from his magazine ranking and asks him out. She asks Jackie to call her mom, then grabs her arm as she walks away, saying she's scared. Jackie assures her if she's not scared, the patient shouldn't be and Jackie promises to be at her bedside when she wakes up.

Sam seems intent on irritating Jackie, playing air drums. She tells him to knock it off. A man comes in looking for his husband, Marcus. Jackie takes John to him.

Cooper tells Eddie about the girl he wants to set him up with. Eddie says he doesn't need the help and he's seeing someone, but it doesn't always feel like a two way street. Then he shows Eddie her picture. He's in.

Jackie protects John as he waits for his husband in a chair in the hallway. Cooper can't help going over and telling him that he has two moms, adding that it might comfort him to know that. Then Thor comes over, explaining that Cooper is a mess and thanking him for paving the way.

"Can I not be gay right now?" John asks. "Can I just be a guy whose spouse is dying? Can I have that?"

O'Hara comes out to update him, telling him his husband's body is dying and his defibrillator is keeping him alive.

Zoey tells Jackie the girl with the bullet in her head is out of surgery. Jackie continues what she's doing. Eddie texts Jackie about his date. She responds that he should do what he wants.

Kevin waits with Grace in the child psychologist's waiting room. She tells him she thinks it'll be good to be a patient.

John waits over his husband's bedside. The cardiologist comes to see him.

Later, Jackie talks to Kevin about Grace's appointment. But she doesn't want to talk to Jackie.

Cooper sits down next to her and starts talking about hair care products. She leaves and joins O'Hara staring at a Jesus statue with arrows in his chest. "That seems about right," O'Hara says.

Jackie tells her it is possible for someone to love two people at once, she loves Kevin and Eddie. "I'd rather be dead than be Kevin or Eddie," O'Hara says. "Don't get me wrong, I like Sarah, but I'm glad she's gone," Jackie says. "What can I say, I like being your girl."

Mrs. A asks Jackie to stick around for another shift but she says no. The cardiologist tells Jackie that John's husband is a lawyer and has a DNR but John can't pull the plug and she has a cello recital to be at in 45 minutes.

Jackie goes to talk to him. He wants to know how they'd deactivate the defibrillator. He asks what happens if they do nothing. She tells him again that the body is dying and the machine is keeping his heart alive. She's patient with him and he's coming around when the cardiologist comes back to check. He barks at her asking if he's keeping her from something and saying they'll do this on his time line.

    Zoey grabs Mrs. A's overtime.

Jackie finally goes to check on the girl with her bullet. Cooper breezes in to check that their date is on. He leaves and the girl reminds Jackie that she said she'd be there when she woke up and wasn't. She wants Jackie to keep the bullet. "Keep your f------ promises," she tells her.

O'Hara and Jackie sidle up to Kevin's bar, where he pours them shots. He tells O'Hara she was a big hit with the second grade.

Then Eddie and his date walk in. O'Hara thinks he's completely mental as she pretends not to know him. He needles Jackie, telling O'Hara she looks familiar.

Eddie's date hangs on him and rubs his head and Jackie tries not to care.

Kevin asks how they met and when he says his friend Cooper introduced them, he remembers Jackie works with a Cooper. O'Hara makes up a quick reason to leave right away and Jackie begs off too. On her way out she tells Eddie to get the "f--- out of my bar."

John sits outside his husband's curtained off area, defiant and on his own schedule.
