As the series' 100 episode, this show obviously meant a big deal to the cast and crew. It is usually the amount needed to assure subsequent reruns. To mark it, JLH herself is the director. And the script was written by creator John Gray, who had been ousted as executive producer at the end of Season 3, thus ushering in 2 final seasons of below-average stories.
This pretty much signals the end of the Book of Changes thread, as the major antagonist attempting to gain its possession, is dealt with in an unseemly manner. It really is never made clear exactly why the Shadows are so keen on possessing it, seeing that the Book itself has a mind of its own and is capable of changing the text, or deleting it altogether. But going into S5, the producers were hard up for ideas for a continuing story line, and this was it.
JLH does an adequate job of directing the show, and I imagine the climax had to be well mapped out so it could be done in one take. Gray's imprint is clearly on the script, as he does a fine job of building suspense. Once again a child ghost is included, one of Gray's favorite devices, but only has a marginal part to play.
