Character Orlando Friar receives an instant message dated Feb 28th when the movie is taking place during the winter holidays.
When the elevator is on fire, Orlando wants the fire to be put out to prevent the smoke reaching the sprinkler system.
However this system only activates on heat/flames, not smoke.
