One Day review
dtrionfi3621 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
One Day is a film about two college graduates who met on July 15th 1988. The rest of the film follows the two throughout the years on July 15th up until 2011. Starting the film I did not know what it was going to be about. I did however enjoy it. There was a twist that I was not expecting, and made me cry. I did not however like Anne Hathaway's fake British accent. If you are a nut about chick flicks I would recommend this film, or even if you are in the mood to shed a tear or two. I did like Jim Sturgess role. I like how he was portrayed as a jerk, but in the end ends up warm hearted. I also liked the concept that the scenes in the movie were based on the one day every year.

Misleading previews
strawberrywombat23 August 2011
Not since "Breaking the Waves" has a movie more disappointed me and made me feel like I wanted my money back. In fact, I actually did get a free ticket from the theater for a future movie. The trailers made it feel like it was going to be something much different - a movie needs to have more than good acting and cinematography. Anne Hathaway is an excellent actress for sure and there are many isolated scenes in this movie that might be good for personal study if you are developing the craft of acting yourself. If you are interested in lighting and camera work, many technical elements are high quality in this category also. However, there is no story here worth telling. It will mess you up for a week - guaranteed.

THE love story
giannellatonna4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One day is The love story. It has everything : love ,a bit of mystery and extreme tragedy and heart-break for the characters and the audience. This film contains two amazing lead actors.

This film has made it on the list, the list of films that made me cry.

For it's not the ordinary girl meets boy, they fall in love ,something happens and then, they end up together. No, it's not because this is more tragic, more heart felt and moving. It also makes you treasure the people who are dearest to your heart.

I highly recommend this film. Give it a chance because it will give you a new definition of love.

SPOILER ALERT - Film was too rushed
mauness28 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I love my romance films and books. I hadn't read One Day yet, which I have heard very good reviews. So I thought I would watch the film first and then delve into the book. I figured out the ending since every review in magazines and papers mentioned that everyone was reduced to tears, which meant it would have a "Nicholas Sparks' Ending" - aka someone dies at the end. I was disappointed because I went in with decent expectations, as I haven't read the book and tried not to watch any long trailers so it wouldn't ruin it for me. Then I watched 30 minutes of it, skipped to the end to watch the death scene and then stopped it altogether. There was not one spark between the actors. From what I understand, Jim Sturgess is supposed to play a self-involved jerk, so he did that well, but then I still didn't like him. Anne Hathaway just looks like an irritated school ma'am for those entire 30 minutes. I just didn't find any depth in either of them for a film that was supposed to offer depth. They tried to fit a book into a film, which never really works, unless you're doing an 8 hour version of Jesus of Nazareth. When you look at all books ever adapted for film, there will always be a lot missing and minor characters and subplots completely taken out. That is what should have happened with One Day. There was no long looks between the characters and everything felt forced. For instance, with my favorite, the Bridges of Madison County, the first half hour of the movie focuses on one whole day they spend together and it's those little things such as the quiet moments that build that emotion, that love and the viewer's bond with the characters. I am bummed that "One Day" failed on those three accounts.

a relation
Kirpianuscus25 July 2016
romanticism. humor. slices of drama. meetings. and the same July 15Emma and Dexter. the seed of graduation and the passing years. and the inspired performance of Jim Sturgess in a film who seams ignore the characters. because One Day is only chronicle of a relation. the characters are only silhouettes who the public must imagine. the story is nice and seductive and emotional but not always coherent. or credible. something missing. and it is not exactly a small detail. because on the screen is presented a growing up relation . but the subject is far to be original and the end reminds too many similar. I admit, I have not read the book. and this does to supposed that the film is just a part of the industry around a popular literary success.but it is not a sin. because it is a nice story of a relation, better then many contemporary romantic films.

Absolutely dire !!!
cescadi-159-40707113 September 2011
Went to see this tonight with my 18 year old daughter and it was so bad we actually walked out half way through. Had been really looking forward to it and went armed with plenty of tissues expecting a real weepy having read the reviews and it was awful. The film seems to take forever to get going, jumping from one year to the next but without really giving you enough in any one year to get the story moving. The characters have no redeeming qualities and are so one dimensional that you really don't care what happens to them and Anne Hathaway constantly switches accents - one minute she sounds like the Queen Mother, the next minute she sounds like Paddy McGuiness! Don't waste your time or your money.

Theme has been done before but here there is no chemistry
zandieh-4129225 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Anne Hathaway's performance was good in this movie. I find her consistently good. But the character of Dex was unconvincing and badly acted out. There was practically no chemistry between the two main characters leading me to not really root for their relationship to happen. Usually movies like this will make me cry and this did nothing to me. I had no emotion because the characters don't bring any emotion out in you.

Let's face it this movie theme has been done before so the story isn't unique either.

I don't know how the producer didn't see that this movie has no charisma or emotion or charm and the acting is subpar and unbelievable but that is probably the main issue with it.

If you like this type of movie I'd recommend Love Rosie. It's the same friendship turned love story except in that one the characters have a really great connection and you're rooting for them to end up together, it doesn't have the terrible ending and the storyline is much more interesting. It even has the same pool scene, the same druken night, the same sick parent, the same one person getting married and having a kid and the same fight and separation period. Except it's much much better.

I wouldn't recommend One Day.

Should have read the book
hannaandersson-4777823 October 2022
I did not read the novel this movie was based on, which seems to have been a mistake. I had such big hopes for this, learning it's storyline was similar to "when Harry met Sally" and that Anne Hathaway was playing one of the main characters! Unfortunately I was very disappointed by it. Hathaways character was not given much dept (which I gather it did contain in the book version) and unfortunately, the fake British accent did not help Hathaway bring life to it in the way she usually is so skilled at. It lacked chemistry and and the plot was not interesting enough to keep me entertained throughout the movie.

Reasonably well produced and the actors did the best they could with the script but if you haven't read the novel, don't bother watching the movie.

White Bow Ties
chrisgolland-1447711 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Having graduated Edinburgh Uni in 1991, it ruined it for me at the start to see the boys in their gowns with ties. Every grad of Edinburgh knows it's a white bow tie and always has been :). Good film though, Anne's English accent is perfect. The book was better.

It might have been...
thiagosblancos11 March 2020
Let's start by saying that I loved the book, I read it before the movie was screened so of course I know, well before I even went to the cinema to watch this, that it was not going to be as good. That said, boy, what a lost chance to make a great film this was.

First, if you wanted a British actress, Anne Hathaway is not your girl, hey, don't get me wrong here, she *is* a good actress and I love her but she cannot make a Brit accent for the life of hers, she just can't. And on top of that, she has proven that before in "Becoming Jane" so why did they chose her to begin with!?

Then, Emma is a bit chubby and AH looks like she has never had an extra pound in her life. Kudos btw!

It's a pity that this is what they delivered out of a superb book, it has all, and it is a 9/9.5 when the movie can mostly get a 5/10. Even more, this film does not do any credit to the story. And it's not the actors' fault, at all.

I do hope someone, someday, will give it a go again. But I doubt this could be portrayed in a good way in a movie, it is too long to be shortened this much without destroying its ethos, same happened in "The Goldfinch", a miniseries might have worked better and would have given time to the story to be developed, and that is exactly what the writers didn't have unless they chose to make a 5 hours' movie.

Now, all the bad reviews concerning the end and all, people, grow up, or get a shrink, it's up to you, life s*cks on a daily basis, and these things do happen. Whenever you feel you have everything... well, you got something wrong but you were happy, perhaps you didn't notice at some point but you actually were, that's the message, they had that, they had each other and they found one another. If you didn't get that, well, get help. Really, for life is as far removed as possible from "Legally Blonde" at this point.

And I promise, it will get worse.

Booooring
tapio_hietamaki29 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I like romantic comedies, some of them at least, if they're well made, genuinely emotional, funny and/or sexy. I liked The Notebook, I liked PS. I Love You, I even liked He's Just Not That Into You a little. But One Day was just boring. It wasn't genuine, it felt calculated and forced and it wasn't one bit romantic. All the romance died in the first half hour and then it was just bleak, but not so bleak it was tragic, just bleak enough to bore you.

Anne Hathaway has good performances (no, not The Dark Knigh Rises) but this wasn't one of them. She felt uninspired and unsure of what to do and where to take the character. The story tried to tell the story of two entire lives but ended up showing a poorly sketched flash, and what's worse, a flash we couldn't identify with.

The end twist made me burst out laughing, and trust me, that wasn't the intention.

Reasonable effort, poorly cast
robinssa-9850720 July 2018
Fine actors as they all are the casting let's the original story down. Em is supposed to be a down-to-earth socially inept plain Jane with a broad Yorkshire accent. By contrast Dexter is a posh kid, louche, slightly out of control. Neither actor really channels this. Ann Hathaway can't be disguised as plain just by putting a pair of spectacles on her, and her accent is as cut glass as dexter. Meanwhile D just appears sleepy. Not the clear distinction on which the book thrives.

Intriguing but lacking
Floated223 June 2018
Movies based on novels are usually different and can be difficult in keeping up with the source material. Not having read about the original novel or knowing anything about the material, opinion is based upon the film solely. One Day is quite similar to the Notebook in some sense but overall the film does do a good job at appealing to its demographic. The acting is decent but overall, as with many romantic comedies. Anne Hathway is likable as usually but Jim Sturgess character appears to be less (although he becomes better as the film passes).

One Day is quite predictable at certain points. The completely ending and final scenes were most so different than expecting and not predictable though he story as a whole.

One Day also somewhat reminded of (500) Days of Summer but that film as a whole was more complete in almost every aspect, as likable characters, plot, humor and overall engagement. Overall, One Day is just somewhat depressing in the end and not in a touching way.

Interesting idea, dull movie
Treyroo24 November 2012
Emma and Dexter graduate from school and then end up at her place for what could've been the beginning of a whirlwind romance or a one-night stand but ends as something of a near-miss with them deciding to remain friends. Emma (played by Anne Hathaway with an absentee accent that comes and goes with no real mention) is an aspiring writer from a humble background. Dexter (played by Jim Sturgess of 21 and Across the Universe) is the son of wealthy parents with whom he has a difficult relationship.

Through many years we see Dexter (Sturgess) go from a television personality who's despised even by his fans to a man with no career who takes a job at a restaurant in the hopes of moving up the ladder in the organization to make a living for his wife and child. Meanwhile Emma (Hathaway) spends most of that time working in a Mexican restaurant and involved with a man she doesn't love but who loves her dearly. And for a large portion of that time in her life, she and Dexter are not speaking despite being each other's best friends.

While Sturgess is believable enough as the uber-cad who gets by on charm until that gives way substance abuse and boorishness and Hathaway is fine save for her accent, the story isn't very interesting and the ending left me annoyed and confused and maybe more than a little aggravated. This is not really what one looks for in unadulterated sap.

Left me grumpy
bkaygordon4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The last scene of the movie sums it up, he regrets. He should have done things differently from the get go and he'd would have had better odds at happiness, respect for himself and less guilt in disappointing his parents. Yes, there are moments I had tears; I understood where the movie was going and I was very happy she forgave him and let him grow up, but it certainly didn't serve her much.

Reminded me of why I stopped watching romantic films
erasharma-3040524 February 2024
I guess with good music , cast and background location any atrocity can be celebrated ! Not only there was no Character depth in any of the characters , they became too boring to be watched as the film progressed almost as much that you wish that they dont end up together , there was no great ending just some recap of the same old thing , why wasnt it realised by the characters sooner , the whole film in the middle part is just a drag so that this whole bs can be fit into a 2 hour long movie . Expected it to be at the level of about time , before sunrise or 500 days of summer ...massive waste of what potentially could have been a good story.

Some books are better as books.
torrascotia15 March 2022
This has been on my watch list for quite some time, being that its billed as being about Edinburgh University students and is partly shot in the capital. While the book was apparently a smash hit, the film was less well received.

So roughly 11 years after its release I finally managed to watch it and its a fairly average movie.

Its not quite a romcom, certainly not in the same ballpark as a Hollywood one. Its more of a romantic tragedy.

Whether you engage with and stick with this story is alot to do with whether you find the people involved likable. The problem is I didnt. These people are what are known locally or in particularly at Edinburgh University as the "yahs", based on how they pronounce yeah, being as posh as they are. They go straight from University to top end jobs albeit with a waitress job in between. These aren't exactly everyman relatable characters. The other issue is the two protagonists seem entirely immature and self adsorbed. While neither person will take the step towards a proper relationship with each other they still involve themselves with other partners while being emotionally unavailable to them. This to me is where the story falls apart. Its supposedly meant to be a great romance but its basically just a story of two people being friend-zoned. Its funny how the female reviewers all see the man as some kind of jerk but her behaviour is as bad if not worse, just see how she treats her comedian boyfriend. Not to mention her odd attachment towards the man she is supposed to love who she spends most of the movie rejecting him.

The final act is the most engaging however its also the most emotionally manipulative in a rather clumsy way. The use of music and flashbacks is very heavy handed as if its commanding the audience to CRY NOW! However as previously outlined its actually a vacuous ending as it shows there was no real great love affair, just a roll around Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh and alot of will they wont they for the next twenty or so years.

I am sure the book is better as it has more scope to explore the emotions and motivations of both parties but this is in no way an above average film. The series Normal People explored similar themes and simply did it much better.

Ridiculous just Ridiculous: One Wasted Day!
ladymoonpictures8 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Absurd plot. Total Junk. Contrived love. Weak plot to the point of being inane! So, these two people meet on July 15th. Have a so-so relationship at best and all of a sudden, they're best friends deciding to meet on that day every year. Sounds weird, right? What about the other 364 days, over the next 21-bloody years? What about the other day to day relationships, interpersonal situations, struggles, challenges, obstacles that hits those dealings with reality-mortality -- which is all of us? What's the big deal about one lousy kiss on the sidewalk? The one missed opportunity to ball the old lady? (Didn't she say in the movie when they first met, when she graduated that she was 40-years old? If I heard that right, that makes this old broad (and Hathaway in real life) like 60 when she drives the bike out into the street from a blind alley, without looking! Really! Okay, you get it. I give this lousy movie a 2 because I'm feeling generous. At least Hathaway was fully deserving as a candidate for this year's "Darwin Awards" had it been based on a true story, which thankfully, there's no way in 'heck' this could ever possibly happen to any two people that ever existed on this planet. What's worse? I had to actually pay admission to see this pap!

Boring boring boring
mjcast-8705016 February 2024
Ok I am old but I watched the first episode having read great reviews and was totally bored .. no chemistry between the two main players and even fast forwarding it was still dreadful!.. was it meant to be thought provoking or funny?.. it was neither and I have to find 600 words to complete my review ... if this is the future of Tv I wave my white towel ...am I missing something?.. I assume the positive reviews are from a younger audience who dislike things like the grand tour etc...still a 144 characters to go ... being funny in 2024 is going to be very tricky.. long live Ricky Gervais!... off to bed now because it made me feel very tired!!!

One Day more artistic than Romantic
rgkarim20 August 2011
One Day has finally arrived in theaters this weekend. Unfortunately for me, the anticipation I had been feeling this movie was all in vain. At first my curiosity was peaked as I got to learn about Hathaway and Sturgess' characters. However, the movie soon became repetitive, boring, and incredibly slow, which combined with the depressing problems in this movie makes this movie drag. Those looking for an artistic take on real life romance should be pleased with this film, but those looking for an upbeat and uplifting comedy will want to stay away from this film. There are some strong morals that this movie will teach the audience, and an ending that should shock most people who haven't read the book. Overall I recommend this movie would be better rented than seen in theaters.

the solution to the problem of annoying bikes in the traffic
ipanema_2213 September 2011
I'm almost 100% sure that the guy who made that film received the idea one day that he was driving while annoying bicyclists were getting on his way, so he thought "how can we reduce these freaking bicycles from the roads?", then the answer came in his mind "scaring them away with a movie!" and then he came up with all this romance just to show us how dangerous cycling is and better don't do it.. cause otherwise i find no reason of existence of that miserable film. .. It's not that I didn't laugh or that i didn't enjoy some moments, but -i don't want to reveal anything- at the end of the film I realized I should have done anything else than watching this pointless thing.. maybe reading a book, writing some music, listening some music... but for sure NOT GOING FOR A RIDE WITH MY BICYCLE!

One day is not an epic romantic movie
telonius11 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Let's be clear. One day is not an Epic Romance. If that is what you are looking for. Go see "They way were were", "Same time in September", "Love story", maybe even "Little Romance" with Diane Lane. One more, "Notting Hill".

If you like watching Anne Hathaway and you are a fan of her like some of you were of Julia Robert then go see it. Actually Anne lips remind me of a younger Julia Robert.

The story well, I don't know, I didn't connect with them as I enjoyed "Notting Hill" for example. Some people claim Anne's British accent wasn't good. Well, it would have not matter. It is the story that suppose to be important here. I didn't read the book. Perhaps the book is so much better. I might get more details. You do the accent in your mind and it just might be perfect when you are reading, right? When it comes to the movie, well, it did not work for me.

When Emma spend the first night with Dexter she says that she doesn't know how to act in these situations. What? Any freshman from any college would have done more than just say I don't know what to do.

She is a high maintenance girl. He is a lover, manipulative, womanizer, cocky boy. Most women in general would fall for this guy and not the nice guy who she meets later in the movie. Well, the filmmaker make him that way. These scene were not great. No chemistry. Perhaps they were on purpose so you don't like this guy. On the other hand the scenes with Dexter were sometimes funny. More compatible and confrontational. They try to say what they felt.

Dexter would call her 5am in the morning, all drunk, drugged and almost out of life. She seems to be the greatest friend ever in the world to answer the phone and willing to talk to him to open his eyes. Another woman would just runaway the other way. Unless she is into drugs too and all that fast lane life.

The movie has its moments but it is not consistent. Very few laughs. This is not even close to "Notting Hill" which I was expecting a step higher. A new look. A new fresh look. Maybe it needs Sorkin to spice up the dialog an scenes.

So, if you enjoy Anne and her movie go see it but your boyfriend may not. Of course, who is paying the ticket. Good luck.
