Just Deserts

This is a very interesting character based episode.

General Grievous lands on planet Saleucemi in an escape from the Jedi and Republic troops who come to the planet pursuing him. Grievous must find a transmitter and call for rescue before Obi Wan and his clone troopers catch up with him. Meanwhile, Rex gets injured and recovers on a farm owned by a family which he discovers is the family of a clone trooper who deserted.

The character study with Rex and his deserter counterpart is quite deep and very interesting. This is broken up with action and humour with Grievous and his battle droids and children causing a pod full of commando droids to attack. A very strong episode.

My rating: 9/10.

The Deserter

Dave Filoni once said that this show was primarily about the Clone troopers, and this episode really enforced that statement. Not only was this a great episode that focused on a different aspect of the war, but it gave a great look at how close the troopers are. The idea of a deserter feels so foreign to the world of "Star Wars," and yet they managed to make a poignant episode about the ties of war and what they can do to someone. The action in the episode was a nice bonus, but the meat of the story came from that storyline, which I appreciated a lot. It is a great character study, and it all adds to the development of Rex, and with the benefit of knowing where he ends up ultimately, this episode just adds up so perfectly with what happens down the line.

Warning: Spoilers
The dynamic between rex (one of the most loyal clones we have seen) and a deserter is incredible. These clones are still human with deep thoughts and feelings and this episode explores it more than any other. My favourite scene is where Rex joins the family at the table and is told that he too longs for a family. The deserter says he knows it because they are all clones so think similarly. I found this interesting as all the clones must have this urge to be pulled away from the war. This sets up a conflict in all clones whether they should begin a family or serve in a war. Even rex considered it. Overall, an intriguing study of the humanity and mind set of the clones.
