The Toba Human Bottleneck Hypothesis proposes that an apparent decline in homo sapiens populations about 75,000 year ago was the result of the eruption of the Toba super volcano on the island of Sumatra. But the Earth was already going through a series of climate fluctuations so maybe the cooling period just happened to coincide with the eruption.—David Foss
