Nothingness

Warning: Spoilers
"Kompisar" or "Flatmates" is a 21-minute live action short film from 2007, which means it will have his 10th anniversary next year. The director and co-writer is Magnus Mork. It is a gay-themed little movie about a couple who live in the same household. That's also basically all there is. There is no real story, no plot, nothing happens. I often hear the argument that a film does not need to be spectacular to be convincing and that's certainly true, but it still needs good character development or an interesting story. There is nothing like that in here. The film entirely relies on people being interested enough in the gay couple to find the film interesting. Now imagine this with straight characters. Everybody would find it boring and it's not interesting only because of their sexual orientation. It also does not help that the actors and their characters are as bland and uninteresting as it gets. What a weak little film. Stay far far away.

Short film about the limits of friendship.

Two best male friends decide to share a flat and we see their relationship slowly disintegrate as they both act differently upon their expectations of this relationship. External factors only add to the difficulties. This all culminates in an event that they are unable to overcome. This is one of my favorite short films. If you are looking for fast action or gay clichés, script read lines or fancy visuals you might as well skip this one. This one comes with a naturalistic pace, some boredom and authentic characters with their good and bad habits. I think both main actors do an outstanding job at portraying the two friends and their struggling friendship within the space of a small suburban flat. A true gem.
