- It's an important day for Tristan in more ways than one, as he celebrates his birthday and Siegfried gives him new responsibilities as a vet. Tristan has to withstand the pressure and succeed in the challenge set by his older brother before returning to Skeldale for his birthday festivities. Meanwhile, Mrs Hall reminds James that he needs to tell Helen some home truths.
- For Tristan's birthday, he gets a luxurious vet bag, a home dinner party promise and finally his own 'list', with James along to 'take his lead' driving the fancy car. Tristan does great delivering a calf and filing horses' teeth, kicked by aptly named stallion Satan, even manages to invite the aristocratic estate heiress Margot Sebright Saunders to his party. There Hall makes sure Helen learns about the Glasgow job offer and motivates James to stay for an 'us'. James laughs when Tristan reports how he put on a show to further impress the farmer clients, which has unintended consequences.—KGF Vissers
- It's Tristan's birthday, the day he receives the gift Mrs. Hall had long bought for Siegfried to give him to signify he becoming a vet, namely the monogrammed medical bag with his "official" designation imprinted as such. To celebrate, all those at Skeldale plus their current plus ones are planning on going to the Drover's for drinks at the end of the day. Tristan is able to convince them, especially Mrs. Hall, to have a small dinner party instead, Tristan, as the man of the hour, who is certain he can find a plus one for the more important dinner by the time. Symbolically, Siegfried gives Tristan arguably something more important as a birthday gift: responsibility, as, for the first time, Tristan is designated lead vet in going out on rounds on his own. Siegfried, Mrs. Hall and to a lesser extent James demonstrate at various times during the day that they believe it will not be problem free for Tristan, while Tristan despite some self-doubts and some fears that Siegfried has ulterior motives in designating him lead vet, tries to muscle his way through the day while inserting some of Tristan's own mentality on how to ingratiate himself with their clients. The one call Siegfried retains for James is to the Aldersons in James, at some time, needing to have the discussion with Helen about the job offer in Glasgow. What happens during this day affects what happens at the dinner.—Huggo
