In the first scene, Shawn arrives to the movie and Gus scolds him for showing up late as he's "missed a third of the movie." The movie they are seeing is Psycho (1960) and in it's original release, the director, Alfred Hitchcock, created an advertisement campaign that informed prospective viewers that it was "required that you see PSYCHO from the very beginning" and warned them that theaters were instructed to not admit anyone that arrived after the film had begun. Shawn's late arrival could be a nod to this campaign.
Shawn tells Yang he liked Bruce Campbell's book better than hers. This is a reference to horror movie vet Bruce Campbell's autobiography "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor". Bruce Campbell later guest stars on S8E9.
When Lassiter and Gus are going up the clock tower a dolly zoom shot is used which was used for the first time ever in Hitchcock's Vertigo. This is Another homage to Hitchcock in this episode.
Pineapple Spotting: The pineapple was part of the fountain by the stairs that Lassiter and Juliet ran up by the field.
Shawn tells Chief Vick he and Gus are going to do "nothing", which causes Lassiter to respond with "How very Seinfeldian of you". This is a reference to the TV show Seinfeld, the show about nothing. Timothy's first onscreen credit was the younger brother of Susan Ross on Seinfeld.
