Learn about the history and science behind the sport, whose concept dates back to the dawn of aviation, and see top-notch aerobatic performers, including the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.
Narrated by Paul Walker of "The Fast and the Furious," with spectacular aerial photography filmed entirely in 3D and unprecedented access granted to the course, AIR RACERS puts you in the cockpit to experience the intensity and high-speed thrills of a sports event like no other for the very first time in IMAX and 3D digital theaters.
Air Racing dates back to 1909, just six years after the Wright Brother' inaugural flight. An intrepid young American named Glenn Curtiss won the very first air race in Reims, France when he completed two laps in 15 minutes with a top speed of 46 mph (75 km/h).
In the 1930's, the sport evolved into multi-pylon air races that were held in Cleveland, Ohio and Los Angeles, California. The races were subsequently abandoned in the 1940's & 50's due to limited resources during World War II and the necessary economic & infrastructure restoration efforts after the war. Resurrected in Reno, Nevada in 1964 by WWII flying ace Bill Stead, the Reno Air Races celebrate the horsepower, ingenuity and skills of pilots who operated these WWII fighter planes under much more dangerous and dire circumstances. AIR RACERS features a cast of exceptional pilots and legendary aircraft, including the P-51 Mustang, Corsair, Bearcat, T-6 and many others.
Fly Low, Fly Fast & Turn Left ...
At the Reno Air Races, fields of eight planes race multiple laps around an 8-mile course: a rough oval marked off by 10 pylons. During the race these planes achieve speeds of over 500 mph at a mere 50 feet off the ground. Grouped closely together, each pilot must fight for position and running a tight course is critical for victory. But it need only take a single miscalculation or mechanical failure to impact the entire field of planes with potentially catastrophic results.
A century after the genesis of air racing, audiences will meet 23 year old Steve Hinton, a rookie pilot from California whose goal is to perpetuate his two-time National Air Race Champion father's legacy by winning in the most highly-anticipated and unpredictable race class, the "Unlimited."
An action-packed, entertaining and visually stunning film presented in 3D and 2D and giant screen theaters and digital cinemas, AIR RACERS is also a unique invitation to discover, from the pits to Reno's roaring sky, an exceptional world filled with passion, competition and excitement combined with precision air show performers.
