It is stated that one of the boy's applications to join the Navy was rejected because he lied about his criminal record. The boy in question only had misdemeanor convictions, which does not necessarily bar a person from service; in fact sometimes courts will give juveniles upon conviction of a minor crime the option to enlist in the military as a sentence, instead of jail time. But a felony conviction, especially for a violent felony, will automatically bar a person from military service. Honesty and strength of character are very important qualities to the military, so it is not the fact that Brad had a few minor theft and drug charges that caused him to be rejected from the Navy, it was the fact that he lied about them and was not honest and upfront. Oftentimes juveniles who are honest about their past will gain the respect of their recruiter and it will serve as a point in their favor.
