- Red John strikes again, this time in the CBI office, leaving three agents dead and Sam Bosco in critical condition.
- Lisbon summons her team to investigate a crime scene in a cemetery, where the body of a naked man was found decorated with yellow roses on his genitals. When they return to the CBI headquarters, they learn that Bosco and his agents have been shot and only Bosco has survived, but is in critical condition. Hicks is missing and becomes a suspect. They interview Bosco's team secretary Rebecca, who had brought coffee for the team; they check the security videos and find that 30 minutes are missing, indicating an inside job. Meanwhile, Jane is looking for the forensics identification of the victim in the cemetery. When the victim is identified, they find Hicks in his office with Red John's mark on the wall. When they head to Clovervill to bring the corpse and the evidence the coroner has gotten, they find that all material is gone and soon they identify the killer's identity. Who might be the murderer of the CBI agents?—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- The CBI team is faced with a violent and shocking crime in their own office, but must work the case in spite of their alarm of who may be behind it. Meanwhile, Rigsby and Van Pelt are definitely an "item."—CBS Publicity
- Rigsby is woken up in bed next to Van Pelt by a call from Lisbon. A call to Van Pelt follows shortly. They shake off the naked glow and head in to work.
Bosco calls Jane and tells him to come see him when he's in.
It's not quite dawn. There's a middle aged dead dude, naked, with a bouquet of flowers over his goodies in a state cemetery. He was stripped after death.
Standing next to Rigsby, Jane notices his fresh lilac scent.
They notice the victim has a red finger, which the coroner explains comes from him having been frozen before he was dumped.
As they leave, Jane compliments Van Pelt on her lilac soap.
The team walks in to work as the sun rises, following in Bosco's secretary carrying coffee.
As they round the corner into the office, they all stop dead. There's blood everywhere and three down agents, including Bosco. Jane can barely stand up as he takes in the carnage. Lisbon thinks she feels a pulse in Bosco and starts CPR as Cho makes a call to lock down the building.
24 Hours Earlier Lisbon finds Bosco and Hicks raiding their fridge, light-hearted banter follows. The secretary walks in and mentions something about an Armenian cartel thing.
Jump back to Bosco being worked on by paramedics. They shock him and get a pulse but he's bleeding out.
Lisbon goes into full combat mode coordinating the lockdown and search of the building and capitol. Van Pelt and Rigsby are in their bullet proof vests and waiting for SWAT to sweep. Jane is still standing dumb against the wall when Lisbon checks on him, thinking he's in shock.
He says there should be three bodies. Where's Hicks?
Lisbon starts to call Cho to get him on it but Jane notices she's covered in Bosco's blood. She washes up, fighting back tears.
Cho interviews the secretary, Rebecca. She hasn't seen Hicks since yesterday and she didn't notice anything when she went for coffee. She was gone maybe 10 minutes. Bosco called the team in early, she thinks because they were near arrests in the Armenian cartel. She says there was an informant who said something about a warehouse.
Jane interrupts, asking if there's anything about the frozen man. She blows him off, saying it's not a priority.
Rigsby and Van Pelt go over security footage and notice a guy in a cap coming in after Rebecca. They switch to the cameras that should be on the garage and find they're corrupted. The system was hacked, leaving a 30 minute gap.
Lisbon starts to brief Minelli on the Armenian case, when he interrupts, telling her Bosco is in surgery with extensive injuries.
Cho has found nothing on Hicks. He's not at home. Lisbon has found that the head Armenian heroin smuggler left town three days ago.
Jane interrupts again, asking about the frozen man. He has a hunch. Frozen guy is Dr. Towlen Mourning. The name means something to Jane.
He speeds to his office in Stockton, followed by Cho and Rigsby. Jane is on full alert as he races into the hospital.
He picks the lock on the doctor's office door but doesn't have to go much father to see into his exam room. There, on the wall, is Red John's trademark smiley face...and Hicks is dead on the exam table under it.
Outside, Jane tells Lisbon that Dr. Mourning was the family doctor for Red John's third and fourth victims, the Peeks, the husband Carter's body was never found.
He tries to figure out why the killings now. Jane thinks Red John tied up a loose end nine years ago but it came unraveled. They think Hicks went to see the doctor because Bosco had a lead in the Red John case. Cho goes for the doctor's files.
Lisbon calls in to have someone search Bosco's office for new Red John clues.
Back at HQ, Minelli gives a press conference outside, promising they'll catch the killers. He takes a question from a reporter who asks if he could describe his feelings. Lisbon listens as he says he's had enough and tells her he's put up with the media's stupid questions for years but that one sets a new low in "horse's assery."
Then he tells her that good people working hard with no resources make the job possible and he lost three good ones today. "You ask me how I'm feeling?" he continues, "I'm feeling sad, you moron."
Lisbon checks with him to see that he's OK, commending his word choice.
Jane goes to Bosco's hospital room, where he's in a medically induced coma. The doctor tells him Bosco's not good. He asks her to check his morphine. When the doctor leaves he closes the blinds and heads to his machines.
Lisbon catches him, and he confesses he's turning off his morphine. He says Bosco is the only one who knows whatever it is about the Red John case and he may die. He unplugs the machine as Lisbon argues but doesn't stop him. She calls him a cold bastard. Jane says it's what Bosco would want, to catch Red John.
The doctor interrupts, plugging the machine back in.
Back at HQ, Cho and Van Pelt tell Jane that Bosco's last call was to a cop in Cloverville, near Stockton. They talked to him and he said a strip mall was torn down last week and they found a body. They have his X-rays. It's Carter Peek.
Jane is delighted, he thinks it's Red John's mistake. He usually only killed women, but Cater was killed with his wife and taken, not Red John's M.O. They think Red John heard the statewide alert about the found body and it upset him because there's evidence on the body.
Cho and Jane go to the Cloverville morgue. But the body isn't there. The coroner says an Agent Rojo picked up the body and all the samples the night before last. Jane asks him to call in the night shift guy who turned the body over to Agent "Rojo."
Minelli calls Lisbon into his office and is about to tell her something "important" when Van Pelt interrupts to show them security camera footage of a pregnant agent who went on maternity leave months ago. Someone switched the footage.
Cho and Jane talk to the night shift guy. Rojo had dark hair, wasn't that tall, was kinda dumpy, olive complected -- in heels. She had a barrette in her hair.
Cut to a woman fitting that description handing out balloons in the hospital on her way into Bosco's room. It's the secretary, Rebecca.
Flash to her taking a gun out of her desk drawer and putting it in a picnic basket. Bosco's agents ask if he's going to talk to the cop in Cloverville, and he says he will right after he briefs Jane. Rebecca walks in and presents her basket of goodies, then takes out her gun and shoots the agents one by one.
Bosco goes for his gun and she shoots him a third time, saying "Red John says hi."
Back in the hospital, she draws the blinds and pulls a gun out of her purse.
Lisbon and Van Pelt bust in behind her and Van Pelt throws her against the wall. As Lisbon is calling her a bitch and struggling not to pull the trigger, Bosco opens his eyes and asks "what's with all the balloons?"
A convoy of state vehicles takes her into custody, where Jane sits in an interview room with her. The rest of the team watches.
Jane thinks he knows her, bad childhood, self-loathing, ashamed of the darkness in her, but Red John made her feel proud of it. She says Jane is like him, the way he can see right through people.
He tells her she's nothing to Red John but a useful object.
She says he's on a mission of love and enlightenment. Without death, there's no life. Without darkness, there's no light. She says Red John opened Jane's eyes from the illusion he was living by killing his wife and child.
Jane asks how she met him. She says she won't tell, but he assures her one day she'll wake up horrified by what she's done and talk. She says she won't, she loves him.
He asks her why Red John had her attack Bosco and his team even after she took Carter's body and the evidence. She says Red John thought Jane would understand: She shot them so that Jane could have the case back. Red John misses him, and it's what Jane wanted too.
Jane ends the interview.
As music plays we see the doctor giving Lisbon bad news as Bosco lies in bed in the background, Rebecca is led away in cuffs, Van Pelt and Rigsby check on Jane.
Rebecca is led down a basement jail corridor, smiling with recognition as a man dressed as a guard walks toward her. With his back toward us, we see him put a dab of something green and slimy on her hand. Almost immediately, she falls down.
Jane gets word and rushes down to holding, warning the guards not to touch her. He knows Red John poisoned her.
Lisbon sits at Bosco's bedside. His wife was out of town and her flight was delayed. Lisbon smiles as she tells him it's going to be OK. He can tell that she's lying.
He asks for the truth. She says the doctors don't think he'll make it.
"I'm going to say it then," he says, "the doctors better be right." He tells her he loves her. She easily says "you too." He says it again, but she knows what he meant. He asks for Jane.
"For the record, I'm very pissed off about this," Bosco says. He tells Jane that Red John makes mistakes -- this proves it -- and he will catch him. He tells Jane when he catches him, don't arrest him -- kill him. "That's the plan," Jane says.
Jane leans in close to catch whatever he says next, but nothing comes.
One Week Later Lisbon finds Minelli packing up his office. He's retiring. She's bitter. But he says it's time. He tells her to keep an eye on her people, and if Jane screws up, shoot him.
Lisbon joins Jane. She asks him what Bosco said in the hospital. Jane says he told him to look after her.
Jane takes out some tequila - -Bosco's favorite. The team toasts him.
Jane walks away into the dark office. He grabs the Red John case files and takes the folders out. He starts going through them, one page at a time.
