Eddie Redmayne and Hayley Atwell in The Pillars of the Earth (2010)

New Beginnings

The Pillars of the Earth

Edit

Continuity

While Regan and William are plotting with the Bishop to attack Kingsbridge, Regan is peeling an apple that keeps changing from red to green to red.

Factual errors

Robert of Gloucester was not killed in battle and did not have his head exhibited by the victors on a pike as shown. He died peacefully at Bristol Castle and was buried in St. James Priory.
When the White Ship is shown leaving Cherbourg, the streamer in the top of the mast shows that the wind is coming from starboard. However, the main sail hangs straight down parallel with the wind. With this sail configuration, the vessel would be drifting sideways and not move forward.
Robert, earl of Gloucester, died on October 31, 1147. King Stephen's eldest son Eustace was born around 1120, so possibly already 27 years at that time and not a boy anymore.

Miscellaneous

In the scene after the battle, where William Hanleigh and his mother are screaming at each other, there are close-ups of his wife. She has pimples on her forehead which are covered by anti-acne make-up. In the dark ages? I don't think so.

Anachronisms

During the battle scenes beginning at about 15:00, some cavalry are shown using long-swords, which would not be invented for another two hundred years.
The production at one point states that the year is 1156. King Stephen and Eustace are alive. But, in fact, by 1156 both were dead and Henry II had been ruling England for over a year.
