James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Exclusive: Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision and Drafthouse Films are teaming up with Rook Films (Sightseers, The Duke of Burgundy) and Timpson Films (The ABCs of Death) to produce The Greasy Strangler, the feature directorial debut of British helmer Jim Hosking (The ABCs of Death 2).
The Los Angeles-set tale follows Ronnie, a man who runs a Disco Walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also signals the appearance of an oily, slimy inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent, soon dubbed ‘The Greasy Strangler.’

If you have roamed the pages of Twitch for any length of time then you should be well aware of my personal, deep, and abiding love for the work of one Mr Jim Hosking. Sundance selected for his short film Renegades, Hosking is - to be blunt - a weird one. But weird in the best possible way. Hosking's short films and commercial work positively ooze with his unique sensibilities and often bizarre, always absurd humor. I'm fond of enough of the man's work, in fact, that I once declared an entire week dedicated to Hosking and his work here at Twitch - posting a new piece every day - which is the only time we have ever done this for any filmmaker, period.Regular readers...

UK based director Jim Hosking rose to international attention thanks to his Sundance selected 2010 short film Renegades - a bizarre, peculiar, absurd and uncomfortably hilarious piece of work. A prolific commercial director Hosking has been uploading his favorite bits of commercial work on to his Vimeo page over the past few months and it is immediately clear that those same adjectives apply to his paid work every bit as much as to his more personal efforts. Is it possible to be a commercial auteur? If so, then Hosking is one. And so we declare this week to be Jim Hosking Week on Twitch, with a selection of his commercial and short film output presented every day. Today: Metro Pcs Guitar Solo....

Chances are if you've been a regular reader of Twitch for any length of time you've probably heard mention of UK director Jim Hosking before. Hosking turned heads at Sundance a couple years back with his short film Renegades, a thoroughly bizarre and hysterically funny bit of work. We've posted other bits and bobs of Hosking's work over the years, all of which is marked by his incredibly distinctive style, and today the director unleashed a torrent of his commercial work on his Vimeo account. It's all fabulous - I recommend highly you do a bit of browsing - but I'm including my favorite below, a ludicrously complex - yet lofi - beer ad....

UK director Jim Hosking is one of the funniest men you have probably never heard of. His short film Renegades played Sundance a couple years back, earning him somewhat of a cult by fusing Lynchian influences with a comic sensibility based in the painfully awkward. It's a brilliant piece, really, and we've been keeping an eye on Hosking and his very, very odd worlds since. And the man has rewarded our diligence by today releasing a trio of shorts about football on his Vimeo account. Says Hosking:This is about two men who play football because they haven't got girlfriends. And they find football is really relaxing and really good for them. You'll find the entire epic triptych below....

Yes, this is the second slice of Jim Hosking weirdness I've posted today - check out his short film Renegades here - but what can I say? He's kind of blowing my mind right now. This one was done for the Australian Advertising Awards. And without further ado, I present The Importance Of Awards In Advertising: A Talk By M. Villavankk (Short Version).

Jim Hosking's Renegades has all the makings of an instant cult hit. This slice of cinematic oddity melted brains at the Sundance Film Festival where it was pretty easily the strangest thing to strike Park City screens since Redford and co unleashed Calvin Reeder upon the world. This is serious strange and seriously fantastic. And we've got it for you below. Check out Hosking's own description of the goings-on:
After short-changing the Prostitute, the Renegades visit the King Of The Pimps for Blue Cake and Pink Cake. Here they meet the Sailor who eats the Clown Cake and suggests they go to the Bar to watch the Dancer. At the bar the Sailor gives the Renegades the Bag, with disastrous consequences. Oh, them Renegades.

The 7th annual Calgary Underground Film Festival is ready to start off with a bang this year on April 12 and then continue through to April 18. Opening night will see the results of the festival’s wildly popular 48-hour Movie Making Challenge, where registered teams were given a genre, a prop and a line of dialogue; then sent out to craft perfect cinematic masterpieces in just two short days.
Then, the rest of the fest is dedicated to some of the wildest films made in both the fest’s home country of Canada and from around the world, including Indonesia, Serbia, the UK and the U.S.
If you’re attending the festival, there’s one incredibly fun documentary you need to see: Michael Petersen’s Eddies: The Documentary, about the craziest beer commercial-making competition in the world — that happens to take place right in Calgary every year! Petersen profiled several...
