Avg movie.

Prithvi looks fantastic and making also is decent. But same old story, masala. There are more than 1000 films in the same formula. One person hitting 100 persons etc. If it's tagged as a commercial, then there is nothing entertaining other than one person hitting action. Watch only if you want to. It's not at all a thriller. No comedy. No dance. No story. Not much songs (not required if story was engaging) . Only vettu kuthu presented in a modern and stylish way. Time pass watchable.

Some logics just doesn't add up. Can watch it for prithvi style and mass if ur a fan. If it's based on real story like raktha charithra, then no compliants. Still couple of nice action songs or music should have pumped up.

A Contemporary Gangster Film Conceived in a Different Form
skmenon199322 December 2022
***Kaapa Malayalam Movie Review***

Kaapa Movie starring Prithviraj Sukumaran Asif Ali Aparna Balamurali Ana Ben, Jagdish in lead role..

Directed by Shaji Kailas

A Gangster Story with a deep Vengeance

Various forms of Gangster films we have seen, kaapa doesn't offer a variety or a unique kind but still Kaapa able to entertain & that is because every character has a powerful impact..

When these characters are performed by talents, then it's always thrilled to watch...

Prithviraj as Kotta Madhu. When it comes to serious genre roles, this man effortlessly performs.

Asif Ali's screen presence comes at certain points of time but during that period he delivers well.

Aparna & Ana Ben , had not been given much screen presence except the last 10 minutes. They should have been exposed more.

Jagdish & Nandu performance was also good.

Although movie directed by Shaji Kailas, at some points we could see his signature film making shots but still this was different from what he done till now.

BGM was fantastic.

Overall a watchable movie.

Throw the burden of novel's visual pattern
sudhakaranakhilan25 December 2022
I think Prithviraj intentionally joins with Shaji Kailas again after Kaduva only because of Dhothi and Fight. He loves to do it with him again. Kaduva was a commercial success flick and thus KAAPA is going on the same path. KAAPA is the cinematic version of G R Indhugopan's novel Shangumukhi. The novelist is also penned for the movie. When Shangumukhi turns to KAAPA does it do nicely? Let's discuss that. The first face that comes into our mind when we hear the title KAAPA is cinematographer cum director Venu. Venu is supposed to direct the film. But due to unknown reasons, Venu quit the project and then Shaji Kailas comes on board. The film completely deviated from the writing pattern that we read in the novel. The appearance of Kotta Madhu was changed even to fit Prithviraj when it comes to the film. KAAPA actually feels like me when a story gets to cut its first and last act shows the middle portion to us and that middle portion seems to be the totality of the movie. So we can say that KAAPA lies in between Shangumukhi. We can't see Kotta Madhu's actual characterization rather we see him fighting with his enemies like a supernatural. Later when Madhu's wife gets into the ground the cinema veils its curtain. So I expect a prequel and a sequel for the movie. Anand and his wife come to Trivandrum for a job, when Anand realizes that His wife, Binu's brother was killed in a gang war thus Binu's name was enlisted in the KAAPA list. He tries to remove her name. On that journey, he knows Binu's brother's enemy is Kotta Madhu and finds more information about him. From then on, we just go along with Kotta Madhu, his past and present endeavors and dilemmas. Typical Shaji Kailas fights were seen at some points in the movie but that doesn't seem to fit into the atmosphere. The emotional backup and depth of the character don't quite convincing. But I feel a disparate travel in the filmography of Shaji Kailas. Shots were beautiful as always in Shaji Kailas's works. Jomon T John's cinematography also looks good. Dawn Vincent's background score was nice but not powerful. Prithviraj corrects his acting through dialogue delivery. His pronunciation of Trivandrum slang was so perfect. Asif Ali, Anna Ben, Aparna Balamurali, Jagadeesh, Dileesh Pothan, Nandu, etc justified their characters. The film will disappoint those who come up with the novel's visual graph and pattern. Those who came without that in their mind, then surely it will entertain you.

Better than Kaduva
bloomquick21 January 2023
I watched this film only because I had nothing else to do. I am not a huge fan of Shaji Kailas films, especially his last outing was such a duller I even forgot the name of the film. Again, very weak on the story part. However, liked the small suspense scenes in the beginning. Impressed with Asif Ali's performance. I think he has done a really good job in this film. His innocence and desperation was quite a watch. Prithvi Raj also impressive with the accent and image. Apart from this nothing worth mentioning. This time though I actually sat through the whole film unlike Kaduva where half the time I felt the need to leave the film half way through but had to stay back because of everybody else. The ending is quite predictable. Like I said, watch it only if you have nothing else to do.

Fail to balance between mass and class
m-ramanan28 January 2023
RATED 6/10 Language: Malayalam Source: Netflix

Watched Kaduva and then decided to give this one a try. This one failed to impress me as the previous one. Lot of scenes are quite unique and presented the gangster rivalry in different people point of view.

This movie is trying to portrait the gangster in half cooked way. It rides in some classic Malayalam cinema way for some scenes and derailed to mass elements in most of other scenes.

Looks like Shaji written the climax and started to develop the story towards that. This is not clicked in right way for the mass masala lovers, like me. Looks like it succeeded in half for both mass and class way.

The film needed a different treatment altogether! [+47%]
arungeorge1328 December 2022
First of all, this movie should have been directed by Venu. The material clearly demands a gritty, slow-build approach and not just a series of scenes that lead to some inconsequential set-piece. Shaji Kailas, I must say, has almost given GR Indugopan's screenplay the typical mass treatment, robbing us viewers the chance to connect better with these characters and their milieus. As a result, you get a watchable film with some fantastic shots (by Jomon T John), an occasional glimmer of hope that Kotta Madhu (a stiff Prithviraj) isn't your usual gangster, and a climax that's predictable from the get-go. Among the performances, Jagadeesh and Dileesh Pothan are solid while Asif Ali is alright. In fact, the film falters when the storytelling perspective suddenly shifts from Asif's character to Kotta Madhu. The ladies, Anna Ben and Aparna Balamurali, don't have much to do here.

Don't waste time
sarathtpm20 January 2023
A common story line, with cliche punch dialogues and unwanted fights to show off. Prithviraj adapted a fake sound modulation to his voice which is irritating. He talks with bass to show his terror attitude. He does his best to take class Malayalam movies to be on par with telegu movies where villains fly in the air. Quality of Malayalam movies and audiences are deteriorating. The success of these kind of movies and actors acting to keep their stardom at top shows the deterioration of malayalam film industry. These kind of cliche movies were the past. Fans apart a common man won't enjoy this movie.

Not Kaapa. Crap!
ravikumarchandran25 January 2023
Prithviraj is trying to do what b grade movies failed to do for years. Bringing down the standard of malayalam movies!

This movie attempts to play the masses, one guy beating hundreds, cool attire, etc., trying to copy the run-of-the-mill tamil masala movies. And, it falls flat!

The story had absolutely no sense. If Prithviraj thinks that cool looks, swift movements, choreographed fight scenes etc., can save the movie, he is sadly mistaken.

The movie leaves such a sour aftertaste, one really questions the sanity of the director for taking a movie in such a haphazard way!

I highly recommend that you save your sanity and precious time and skip the movie!

Giving such a bad impact to this generation
jithdav21 January 2023
I just saw the movie hardly half n hour, I hate this movie only seeing one shot as the leading actor using a child to do the crime, why malayalam industry making such a bad movies??? Which will impact to our kid's also to the youngsters..please stop making such a bad movies.. I was impressed with prithviraj started getting good roles but after watching kaduva and this movie and faith gone to this actor.i would appreciate if our leading actors take such a good roles which give a good message to our upcoming generation, because a movie can influence a lot and these kind of movies are leading to do crimes..Especially in kerala most of the parents take their kids to movie theater and imagine how will effect these kind of movies to our kids..

Very poor
rishipillai-2977328 January 2023
Just wanna be honest here. I usually like all the movies atleast their efforts. But this one its hard to digest.

Imagine adding some old characters in this movie, its gonna be just like any other shaji kylas old classic movies.

Just commercial film to make money out of it and. Since he has date of prithvi for kaduva he probably gave date for this movie too.

Prithvi was amazing, but story & screenplay was a bit weak. Last 15 minutes is good. But still bringing up a wife rivalry is not that why we went for the movie. And people who thought there will be a movie coming well its clearly just a selling point.

Fights are okay, as usual slow motions , lots of smokes & dust.

Fast phased movie with some lagging to be honest.

Lots and lots of flashbacks which sometimes doesn't make connections or sense 😅..

2/5 is my rating.

Why wait till the end for the excitement?
ngandacinema12 February 2023
Why did we have to wait until the very end for the movie to get exciting?😖 Kaapa had all the pieces to be a grand movie, it's just that the storytelling dragged and only became interesting toward the end

DELICIOUS

-Anyone watching Kaapa will definitely admire the mad drone skills of the cinematography!! It was insanely great

-An outstanding work of the lighting

-It was different to see that the film portrayed the gang leader's humanity

-Kaapa's ending was spicy as it brought all the characters to life and showed us the big picture. We were excited and wanted to see more

BLAND

-Kaapa was presented like any typical gang movie with Prithviraj being the one-man army. Basically, the entire movie was about him defeating this and that enemy without ever being injured 🙄

-Asif Ali played the role of an IT guy, but we never saw him go to work; somehow he had all the time to meet police officers and other parties

-The score was quite overpowering, so loud that it drowned the scenes...

Average movie can be better
praveenpanga23 January 2023
Despite a strong foundation on which to build, Kaapa remains a generic gangster drama despite its potential. I truly hope they don't continue filming the sequel after that disappointing climax. Although Anna Ben is the film's central character, she has a smaller role than Prithviraj, Jagathy, and dileesh pothan, who are the film's three biggest pluses. Aparna and Asif Ali were fine with the possibility that had arisen. There isn't much excitement to be had in Kaapa. The fact that it takes itself so seriously stands out as a huge flaw. The group members rarely discuss anything other than business. The weak writing makes the characters seem pompous.
