- Aspiring movie-maker Jonah's date with hot young movie producer Kendra (Jenna Dewan) is going well, as they share an avid discussion re copycat Quentin Tarantino; Jonah hotly in favor, and Kendra coolly against. She wants to hear the Jonah Miller story, and he obliges, the two of them snuggling closer together.
Lauren (Oriental-looking Stephany Jacobsen) comes home from being a lady of the night in a slinky, vampy dress, red slingback high heels and all, and is dismayed to find roommate Ella, who has had a cancelled date, going through her athletic fitness routine. Up and about to witness the spectacle, Ella (Katie Cassidy sportily clad enough to entice any guy into taking up jogging) is impressed with her line of glamorous eveningwear, and wants to know whom she is dating, suspecting that it might most likely be a married doctor. Laurenly blushingly insists rather lamely that the dates were just a series of ill-fated first dates. Ella reminds her she is there to be confided in; chances are that she went through something similar.
Back at the nightclub, the more Jonah and Kendra talk, the more they are drawn closer together. Comes the moment for the kiss, though, Jonah has to confess that he is engaged. Dismayed Kendra wants to know why he didn't tell her sooner. And tells him that if he isn't ready to commit to his fiancé, he shouldn't be stringing the poor girl along.
At Coal, Auggie is preparing a new dish that catches Violet's (hot redhead Ashlee Simpson) eye. She finds it delicious, and convinces grumpy Marcello to taste it, but he is not impressed, too much thyme was used, and he won't be including it on the menu as Auggie had hoped.
Detective Rodriguez is hot on David's tail again, finding him in the embrace of a lovely young thing with whom he is sharing some weed. Not that he is there to investigate illicit drug use. The girl scampers off when she hears about a homicide investigation. Revelations are made re the private detective Ella had hired presumably as a cover-up, but David, reprimanded for obviously protecting his friend, assures the detective that Ella isn't a murderer, and that he wants the guilty party apprehended, for contrary to the indications of a stormy relationship, David loved Sydney. David remembers how Sydney found him grieving next to his mother's gravestone. How she spoke kindly and honestly to him about getting over the loss of a loved one, and how they made love. Rodriguez wants David to rescind the alibi he had given Ella, otherwise he might just start snooping about in David's private affairs, finding explanations as to why David could afford to live so well without any visible means of support....
Next morning, 7.20 AM, as the alarm clock goes off, Jonah and Riley wake up together as usual, but there is considerable uncomfortable tension between them. Jonah didn't wake Riley up when he got home last night, and she wants to know where he had been. His single miserable text was very unenthusiastic, and she knows he left the house feeling very upset after finding out about Auggie. Jonah remains distant, but then finds out his partner Travis "broke his wrist playing Wii" and is unable to help him do today's wedding shoot. Riley offfers to help. Well, her giggles on a previous assignment caused a ruckus, but it could be fun.
Spin doctor Caleb is scrambling to protect the reputation of a client, the rising superstar Jessie, hospitalized after overdosing last night "after an all-night coke fest" and Ella is quick to point out that her roommate works at ULA and that she might help sort out matters.
Mason, owner of Coal, is doing his rounds of inspection, hasn't had breakfast yet, and is enticed by the sound of a yummy new dish Marcello has to offer. Yup, the exact ingredients. Violet tells Auggie he shouldn't take it lying down, but he dejectedly informs her that it is how the system works, he must just make Marcello look good. She rebels at this.
At the hospital, farm-fresh-faced Jessie Roberts is worried about how his reckless indiscretion will affect his family. He insists that he only inhaled two lines of bad coke, but Ella knows better, but nevertheless rummages for a way past this mess. Finding out that the errant heart-throb has an allergy to penicillin, her ploy is to wrangle it so that it would appear that had caused the medical emergency, but she would need hospital staff signing off on that. Needy Lauren! She explains that she needs a whitewashing of last night's events, and that everybody would stand to benefit, as the hospital would get a most charitable donation, and so would Lauren, a few thousand dollars gets offered. But Lauren intends to uphold her forthcoming Hippocratic oath, so this would be a felony against all involved.
Reporting back to Caleb, Ella is admonished for "throwing chump change" at Lauren. Money is nothing to the likes of rising stars like Jessie, she should have offered $50 000, peanuts!
David is also there to discuss important facts. Being informed about the private investigator threw him for a loop, but Ella assures him she didn't do it. The P.I. was a hothead though, and if Sydney caught him snooping around, he might have killed her, and Ella fears she would then be an accomplice to murder. But David sets her at ease, he is certain the P.I. didn't do it. It might very well have been himself. For after too much alcohol, he blacked out again, but vividly recalls his confrontation with Sydney re her subterfuge of coming after him when Michael dumped her. He recalls grabbing her by the wrist and calling her a pathetic whore. She slapped at him, and that's all he remembers.
Ella snoops about in Lauren's wardrobe, admiring the cachets of lingerie, but then finds an envelope stuffed with cash, and is surprised she didn't figure it out sooner that Lauren is a prostitute. Or as she so deftly puts it, Pretty Woman (1990). Lauren remains in denial, but Ella tells her that there is a fortuous way out for her, so why object to screwing the system, since she's already screwing---- But Lauren tells her that her career comes first.
At the wedding ceremony, Jonah is far less than his usual chipper self, enduring the usual unnecessary instructions from the bride's mother. He notices that Riley watches the wedding vows intently, very emotional, and afterwards confesses to her about the miss he shared with Kendra. The big difference being, he points out, that he felt terrible about it immediately, while she showed not an ounce of remorse. She counters that it was meaningless, she had been tipsy at the time. The wedding guests mill bemusedly past the arguing couple.
David snaps. He remembers more now. Waking up with a bloodied knife, bloody tracks, and Sydney's body drifting in the swimming pool. How he got rid of the evidence. Buried it. But it is a construction site right now. Climbing the fence, he rushes over to the spot, and using a spade he brought along, digs feverishly, but finds nothing. It's gone.
Riley pitches up at Coal, wants to know why Auggie spilled the beans re the kiss. He answers that.he thought she had told Jonah by the way he acted. She now tells Auggie that they have to call their friendship quits for the sake of her relationship with Jonah. Auggie is dismayed about this loss, but understanding, though quite perturbed.
Marcello is in his usual tyrannic mode when a porterhouse steak is too overdone. He finds further fault with the new entree on the menu, and at the slightest provocation, admonishes Auggie for having received a visitor, his "exotic" girlfriend, no doubt, Marcello saw the way they had been looking at each other, and has lots to say re Riley's ass. Auggie requests of him to stop referring to Riley as a piece of meat, but Marcello says she's rather like a sweet dessert, care to share? So Auggie, who's been hoarding it up and hoarding it up some more, finally busts loose and belts nasty Marcello. He has him down and goes at him some more. Violet beseeches him to stop. Auggie's definitely going to be out of his job...
Announcing Plan B, Ella doesn't exactly win Caleb's favor. He insists on persisting with finding the nurse's weak spot. But Ella insists, come forward with the truth. That way, they take responsibility for their client's future health without abetting his drug habit. Caleb's not convinced. Always the chance that some tabloid has a nurse as a paid informer, and Ella's way, they control the shots, she points out. And after a stint in rehab, the "baby-faced teenybopper" will be considered man enough for a male lead. Caleb concedes that Ella is right. Ella proudly insists that her friend Lauren will one day be the foremost doctor around.
The knife had been dug up by a construction worker. It has been brought to Detective Rodriguez. The blade fits right in with the cuts that had caused Sydney's death. Rodriguez orders a forensic report and seems confident that he is on the verge of a breakthrough.
David sits there next to Sydney's gravestone, giving her a heartfelt apology.
Violet, breathtakingly elegant in a burgundy bare-shouldered dress and patent-leather black high heels, visits Auggie in his apartment, returning to him his knives he had left at Coal. She inquires about his injured hands, bloodied after the fist fight. They hurt, and she comforts him tenderly. They kiss, deeply, passionately. And end up making love....
Riley announces to Jonah that she broke up the friendship with Auggie. Jonah says that is not what he wanted. Everything had just been going askew ever since his marriage proposal. She is dismayed to learn that Jonah has another interview with Kendra tomorrow, an appointment he cannot renege on, for the sake of the realization of his dream. What is going to become of their relationship?
Ella does something she hardly ever does, by her own admission. She apologizes to Lauren, who doesn't want to hear a Pretty Woman (1990) joke ever again.
