Synopsis

  • Gar rallies the Outsiders against Kobra cultists taking over a transmission station for their master. The other Outsiders take out the cultists, and Gar attacks Kobra and knocks him out.

On Mars, Gar looks at his tablet and the video of him leading the Outsiders against Kobra. He tells Conner and M'gann that he needs to check in with his team. M'gann reminds him that reestablish communications is going to take time, and Conner points out that they're reviewing evidence from the cave-in as well as all the other recent incidents, and they could use Gar's help. Gar brushes off M'gann's concern that he got enough sleep, and rubs his brow.

J'emm comes to the J'onzz home, and Conner tells the prince that there is no reason for concern. Gar interrupts, saying that there's someone almost murdered them and that's cause for concern. Conner and Gar admits that someone might have tried to kill them because they're investigating the king's death, and J'emm says that J'alia, R'ess, and the J'onzz family are the only ones that know they're investigating. M'gann telepathically shares what they've found: two burn marks caused the cave-in, which match the ones that overload the Zeta Tube power core. She says that she briefly sensed a psychic presence near the river, but couldn't locate or identify.

The prince figures that the same person is behind it. S'yraa comes in, and J'emm says that they've met before. J'emm wants to take Conner to see where the king was murdered, but M'aatt notes that Conner has to build the sacred altar for the marriage, and they must meet Conner's friend B'arzz O'oomm at the depot. Conner asks M'aatt to meet B'arzz while Conner and Gar go to the palace with J'emm. As M'aatt agrees, J'ann tells M'gann that she and Em'ree are eager to build the ceremonial canopy. Em'ree is less than thrilled, and M'gann agrees to go with them.

M'gann takes the group outside and introduces them to Bio-Ship's offspring, Baby, and explains that Bio-Ship's entire tribe aided in the procreation. Baby has all of Bio-Ship's memories, and J'emm, Gar, and Conner take Baby out through the tunnels beneath Mars. They realize that Baby is ticklish.

When the three men return to the palace, J'emm takes them to the fountain where his father's body was found. The prince shares the crime scene memories with them, and says that his father believed in peace between Mars' races and solving his murder may be the first step in that peace. Conner and Gar examine the area with their enhanced senses, and Conner finds traces of something familiar but he can't place it. J'emm thanks them for their efforts and offers to join Conner in building the sacred altar. He says that he was nearly married once but it didn't work out, and Conner accepts J'emm's help.

M'gann and the other women fly Bio-Ship to the canopy site, and Bio-Ship mentally tells M'gann that she is retiring, and Baby will take them back to Earth. S'yraa asks M'gann how she bonded with Bio-Ship, and M'gann explains that secretly bonded with Bio-Ship, which was supposed to be bonded with J'onn. Bio-Ship let M'gann stow away when it came to Earth. Em'ree turns away in disgust as J'ann expresses her regret to M'gann that M'gann felt she had to go to Earth. S'yraa says that the wedding canopy is also a reflection of all of M'gann' friends and family who share her love, and together they will work to unite disparate people and unite everyone from future strife. She glances over at Em'ree and says that they build the canopy for reunions as well as unions.

Gar is daydreaming about Brion killing his rival and ordering the team out of Markovia. Conner gets Gar's attention and asks what he was daydreaming about, but B'arzz and M'aatt arrive and interrupt Conner. J'emm remembers B'arzz, the former Green Beetle, and tells B'arzz that he doesn't have to apologize for what he did under the Reach's Scarab. Once B'arzz was freed from the Scarab, he helped repel the Reach invasion.

B'arzz greets Conner and Gar. The group leaves in Baby, and M'aatt explains that through their mental bond, Conner will be tested. The altar will stand as a monument to Conner's devotion to M'gann, and a symbol of his bond with the J'onzz family as well as the entire Martian race. Gar says that they need to first take Conner to the surface so he can recharge his cells with solar energy.

Conner figures that there's no hurry, and Gar worries that someone will attack them. Baby manifests guns on its hull.

The women arrive at the Crystal Cave, and telekinetically assemble crystals to make the canopy. M'gann asks if S'yraa joined the order after her time with J'emm. S'yraa wonders if M'gann read her mind, and M'gann says that she's studied body language and could see the two of them had a history. The priestess says that she was just a girl, but J'emm was a prince.

In the Hollow Hill, the Martians telekinetically assemble the altar from lava-heated rocks. Conner works with his super-strength, and Gar assists after taking the form of the same Martian beast he used in the city against the protestors. When Conner asks how Gar is doing, Gar snaps at him to leave him be. When he sees the lava, Gar has memory-flashes of Brion using lava to kill his rival.

M'aatt and Conner talk about the altar and M'aatt's wedding. The elder Martian explains that J'ann's family disowned her when she wishes to marry a White, except for J'onn. M'aatt says that J'onn learned acceptance as well as tolerance.

Gar hallucinates Brion emerging from the lava and preparing to kill Conner. When "Brion" throws a lava ball, Gar knocks Conner out of the way and Conner hits his head on a rock and then carries him to the surface to recharge. M'aatt and B'arzz go after them, since the weakened Conner won't survive the planet's surface, while J'emm considers Baby.

The women finish making the canopy, and Em'ree telepathically tells M'gann that she's only doing it to please their parents. Em'ree accuses M'gann of pretending to honor the faith, and if she did M'gann wouldn't be marrying a non-Martian. As they argue, their mental waves threatened to shatter the canopy. Em'ree insists that she's not a racist, and she only changed her name because she's a realist. M'gann tells Em'ree that the latter has always been ashamed of her, and Em'ree accuses her of being ashamed to take her Martian form.

Em'ree reverts to her Martian form, and the canopy shatters from their argument. M'gann tells Em'ree that she's done pretending she's something she isn't to make Em'ree more comfortable. She then takes Em'ree hand and says her sister didn't want to risk her popularity by helping her younger Green siblings, M'gann and M'comm. Em'ree says that she was just a kid as well, and J'ann tells M'gann was a child, M'gann would sometimes shift to try and pass as a Green. It never worked, and M'gann's human form is her true form. She apologizes for not understanding that before, and M'gann hugs her mother.

S'yraa says that the fact they can talk about their racial differences proves they have a strong family bond. and suggest they start again on building the canopy.

Gar runs to the surface with Conner, imagining Conner chasing them. Running out into a sandstorm, Gar realizes the sun isn't visible. Conner and Gar are separated, and Gar runs off yelling to Conner that he'll find the sun for him. A flying shard of rock penetrates Conner's oxygen tank, while "Brion" attacks Gar.

J'emm flies Baby with M'aatt and B'arzz inside. They see Gar heading for the surface, follow, and rescue Conner as he passes out from lack of oxygen. J'emm tells B'arzz and M'aatt to tend to Conner while he searches for Gar. Gar blames himself for failing Conner like he failed Brion. "Brion" manifests in a lava form and prepares to kill Gar.

M'gann arrives and telepathically ends the hallucination, She tells Gar that when the protestors brain-blasted him earlier, and left him psychically bruised. Gar says he failed them all, and M'gann tells him that he's the leader of the Outsiders, a family that he built, and he's afraid of losing that family like he lost Rita and Wally. Gar lost Brion, and M'gann tells Gar that no leader can control everything and Brion made his own choices. She asks Gar to let her heal his mind, and when he does she repairs the damage but warns that the emotional and psychic trauma is still there and requires treatment that he must seek out.

    J'emm continues searching for Gar.

Conner wakes up in Baby, and J'emm and Gar return. Gar hugs Conner in relief, and says that he lost it but M'gann fixed him.

Later back at the house, M'gann tells Gar that she didn't do anything. She uses her power to confirm the psychic damage to Gar's mind is healed, and didn't leave any surprises behind. M'gann realizes that the signature of the mind-touch is the one she sensed during the cave-in. They wonder if the person that tried to kill them saved Gar.

Chameleon Boy returns to Phantom Girl and Saturn Girl, and reverts to his humanoid form from the form of Gar's beast form that he took to lure the Martians to Conner. Phantom Girl points out that they can't interfere in anything except the "big thing". Saturn Girl sheepishly says that the history books don't mention the incident, and maybe she always telepathically posed as M'gann to heal Gar. She finally admits that she had to help Gar because he was hurting.

Gar tells Baby that it did great, and he's happy it's part of their family. He then tells Bio-Ship that he'll miss it,.

Conner and M'gann look at the assembled canopy, and kiss.

In the greenhouse on Watchtower, Superman calls Lois and assures her that Conner will be okay, and he and J'onn might get to Mars in time for the wedding. They talk about their son, Johnny, and Johnny starts crying and the communication breaks off at Lois' end. Concerned, Superman calls for a Boom Tube to get home.
