Summaries

  • A man breaks into a tech billionaire's empty vacation home, but things go sideways when the arrogant mogul and his wife arrive for a last-minute getaway.

Synopsis

  • A wealthy CEO (Jesse Plemons) and his wife (Lily Collins) come to their vacation home only to discover someone in the middle of robbing it. It was shown earlier that the robber has been at the property for at least a day and is enjoying the luxuries, the orchards, the pool and the other amenities in the house. The house itself is on a hilltop and is thus not on a frequented traffic route. There is no other house around for miles in any direction. There are no CCTV cameras on the property.

The robber also conducts a very thorough search of the house and steals anything of value. The robber was very careful not to leave his fingerprints anywhere in the house. When the CEO and his wife approach the home in their car, the robber hears them coming and tries to leave the house. He is too late, and the couple are already inside the house. The robber was seen by the wife, trying to escape and eventually caught the attention of the CEO. The robber ties them both up and confiscates their phones. He finds birth control pills in the wife's purse, when he checks the purse for any other communication devices or weapons.

The robber had already noticed that there was a gun in one of the drawers of the house. When he asks the CEO if there is a gun in the house, he lies and says that there isn't.

The CEO agrees to give the robber money ($5000 cash and his Rolex) and forget about the ordeal without calling the police, but the robber (Jason Segel) locks them in a sauna as he does not trust the CEO anymore. Returning to his car (after taking the gun from the drawer and throwing it in a fountain), the robber spots a camera on a tree recording him.

The robber returns to the house (takes the gun from the fountain) and confronts the couple, who had escaped from the Sauna into the orchard and the robber had to capture them and bring them back inside the house. The CEO claims that the camera is not on their property, and they don't know who owns it. The robber is worried that his face is going to be all over the place, and he needs a lot more money to hide and start a new life with new identity documents etc.

The robber asks for $150,000, but the couple helps him understand that he will need more money, and they settle on $500,000. The robber demands the money to be delivered in cash. The CEO is intrigued that the robber chose their home, as they did not have any CCTV cameras and were not expected there (as the trip they made was very spontaneous).

The CEO calls his assistant, who tells him that the money will arrive the following day. It was already 3 30 pm and the bank will do some paperwork before releasing this amount of cash, so it won't be possible on the same day. The CEO tells his assistant he needs to pay another "Debbie", indicating that Debbie was a person whom he had an affair with earlier and had to pay her off to keep her mouth shut.

Several conversations between the trio make it clear that the CEO and his wife are in a strained relationship. The CEO didn't like the tattoo on the wife's foot and was getting it removed. The wife was an assistant and met the CEO at a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy. The wife is now doing non-profit work building hospitals and schools across multiple continents. The robber indicates that the wife married the CEO for his money. The CEO reveals that they are trying to have a baby and wants the wife to cut back on her non-profit work (and move into more of an advisory role) once the baby arrives. The wife reluctantly agrees with the CEO husband. The robber indicates that the CEO is greedy and fired many employees from his company to boost his profits. The CEO says that the redundancies were required to help the company survive.

The CEO asks his wife to get close to the robber. He doesn't trust the robber to let them go once he gets the money and wants his wife to build some emotional connect. At night, the wife tells the robber that she is not happy with her life (she knows about the Debbie incident); the robber tells her to stop calling herself a victim for marrying a man for his wealth.

The next day, the CEO accuses the robber of being a past employee. A gardener (Omar Leyva) arrives to work on the house. The gardener takes the trio outside and talks to the CEO about planting an oak tree. The CEO writes the gardener a note (call 911) using his sketch of the garden. The robber takes notice (when the gardener gets alarmed after reading the note) and orders the gardener to enter the house. His wife and the robber criticize the CEO for jeopardizing another person's life.

After a few hours, the CEO finally breaks. He belittles the robber and claims he will not do anything to them because his life is meaningless. After the robber shoots a warning shot, the gardener tries to escape. The gardener trips and falls through a glass door, and a shard of glass pierces his neck, killing him.

The money is left in front of the house. The wife retrieves it. She sees a passing car but does not signal it before returning inside. The robber ties up the CEO and his wife in different rooms. The robber admits to the CEO that he wanted to know what it was like to live like a rich person. He reveals to the CEO that his wife is taking birth control pills. The wife cuts herself free and kills the robber with a small statue. She also shoots her husband dead, plants the gun in the robber's hand, and leaves the property.
