In fact, I was annoyed when I watched the episodes of this series. Because the story here has just been extended. As a result, the number of episodes has also increased. The ending was not good. The thrilling feeling was not found.

Complicated story

Its Less Plot Driven and more Character Driven
sanyal-sourav24 July 2021
I think after Tashe Ghawr I saw something good in HoiChoi. The the story is loosely based on Agatha Christie's Murder on orient express and very predictable from the beginning. The two things I liked about the Series is the Cinematography and the Character Development. I liked few actors but most of them was just over dramatic and over acted.
Good thriller

Eagerly waiting for Anjan Dutt's first web series. I always liked his direction. The place chosen for the mystery drama was perfect. The use of natural lighting was very clever. The casts could be bit better. Music and cinematograpghy was very good. Worth watching.
Indian version of Murder in the Orient Express

Warning: Spoilers
Unofficial remake of Murder in the Orient Express with the mysticity of Darjeeling. Could have been way better with a better director. Still Agatha Christie comes down to Satyajit Ray's favourite city. Cant ignore it.
A whodunit with oodles of style, suspense and great music

Tony (Anjan Dutt), a yesteryear filmstar, is celebrating his 66th birthday in his trademark style, booze, good food and a handpicked list of invitees, all if whom he knows and has been interacting with. There police top brass, a doctor (his young lover too), a sports teacher who runs a local orphanage, a socialite and media influencer, a filmmaker and an author (who is also his close friend. The venue is his family bungalow in Darjeeling where he has lived all his life. He allows one additional person he doesn't know, a newspaper reporter Amitava (Arjun Chakraborty), as he has been invited by the socialite Sheela (Anindita Bose). The party is in full swing when Tony suffers a heart attack and breathes his last.
Whilst everyone else is convinced that it was a natural death, and quite convinced because of Tony's Bohemian lifestyle and reputation, Amitava smells something fishy and has reasons to believe that there's foul play involved, also looking for a scoop for his newspaper to cover a celebrity death. The more he starts digging, the more clues he starts gathering that reinforce his belief that it was a murder. But who among the guests could it have been, as everyone knew Tony well, loved him and what could be the motive?
"Murder in the Hills" is a stylish, well executed, sleek and suspenseful crime drama with fantastic cinematography, an excellent backdrop of the hill city Darjeeling and some great music by Neel Dutt. Although the drama gets a bit repetitive and slack at times over the 8 episodes, and you often wonder why the protagonist Amitava is finding clues as if they were planted there for him, most of your questions are answered in the climax and it makes for an exciting finish. It's a little over the top and some of the characters like Neema (Sandipta Sen) tend to get on the nerves with a strange English accent and loud expressions, the murder mystery makes for a good, back to back watch.

Finally some thriller in Bengali
ananyomukherjeeslg23 July 2021
The majority of Bengali thrillers made in West Bengal except Feluda & Byomkesh are quite bland and predictable. The murderer gets revealed in the beginning; with either with the face kept out of focus or not shown but all focus being on the murderer's tattoo or some kind of mannerism or the murder weapon even murderer's birthmark, the whole investigation only circles around finding out that. The motive of any character gets cleared out so early that the only person scratching his/her head till climax is the investigator in the movie/series. By that time, the audience gets busy texting, internet surfing or even kissing in the corner seat of the last row. So it was quite clear to me that whatever we can produce, the thriller is not our cup of tea. Even more tragic in the case of the Bengali OTT platforms is when someone gets lured by the trailer. The editor was good so was the trailer but that doesn't do anything to work out a weak screenplay.
This one, I mean, Murder in the Hills, after decades, made me watch till the end of the last episode because even if a Feluda-trained mind could find some scattered patterns and identify some probable murderers, here the plot remains unclear till the climax. And that's very unlikely of any Bengali thriller made out of an original storyline and screenplay, as I can't remember any such in quite a long time. Though the concept is a bit old-styled that is already said at the beginning of the series: "Revenge is the best dish better served cold". The only thing which took out some marks from the screenplay is two very coincidental discoveries though those didn't prove to be that crucial as they didn't spoil the mystery and climax in any way. So, in all respect, we have finally got a Bengali thriller made in West Bengal after quite a long time. And Darjeeling comes as the bonus; neither through unnecessary jump-cuts of Mall, Glenary's, Revolver, Toy train, tea-gardens, spiraling roads nor through long shots of Kanchanjungha; but its people. That's a joy to watch. In nutshell, it is a commendable job done.

Nice direction, but predictable plot.

Warning: Spoilers
Although the applaudable point remains for the points like cinematography and direction, however the plot still remains very much predictable, right from the first episode. The last episode wasn't such a big of a mystery unfolding one, since we could already guess that the main characters were trying to misguide the protagonist. Even a normal viewer would notice that in the murder scene in the first episode, the brandy was shared by everyone, but not the cake.
Agatha Christie story retold
sadruzzaman-127 July 2021
An inferior retelling of Agatha Christie's world famous Murder on the Orient Express, this web series copies the main story and tries to throw in some Bangali masala.
Positive sides are nice acting and very good colors captured in natural light.
On the other hand, a very predictable storyline with a lot of plot holes makes it less enjoyable than an original story.

Decent work

Before watching I heard some reviews that it is bad work. But ther are wrong. I Won't say it superb work but it is much decent. Especially use of natural light. And Anjan Dutt successfully showed us the actual vibe og DARJEELING. Story seems slightly predictable but noob cinema lovers like me will enjoy it much much much. Castings are great though.
Good job.

Web Series Review : Murder in the Hills streaming on HoiChoi (Especially for my Bong Friends🙂)
#sanjuzzreviews
Directed by Anjan Dutt & shot in Darjeeling, Murder in the hills is about a mystery surrounding the death of famous actor Tony Roy(Anjan Dutt) on night of his 66th birthday dinner. Contrary to what his close friends feel, an investigative journalist Amitava ( Arjun Chakraborty) who is also present at the party suspects foul play. Dirty secrets about Tony's past crop up as he digs deeper, putting his life at risk. Will he uncover the truth or fall prey to the malevolent forces working against him, forms the rest of the plot.
This series has a Agatha Christie like feel to it and seems to be inspired by one of her famous novels ( wont tell you the name though.. will be a spoiler alert for sure :-) ).
Speaking of acting the entire cast Dutt, Arjun C, Anindita Bose , Sandipta Sen and the others have done a great job. Cinematography is excellent and the beauty of Darjeeling has been captured in a very Brit like manner. The story is a bit slow to start off, with Dutt dying too easily without any drama and sho-shaa ( he just falls and dies... a cardinal sin...aint it 😁 ).
However the story picks up pace in the second half before culminating in a climax which reveals the all encompassing truth.
Direction by Dutt is good. Music score suits the narrative, you might want to add a song or two to your playlist.
The narrative, however falters a bit at times, but picks up once again to bring things back on track once again.
An 8 part series with small episodes of around 26 mins each, makes it a good weekend binge watch option. Looking forward to seeing more of these from Tollywood.... Khoob bhalo!!
3.5/5 from me for this interesting WhoDunit.. Adios :-)

Shade-copy Story from an English writer and Full-Length Film would be better
arpon_dutta29 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this is the only side of cinema where Anjan Dutt did not work till releasing of the "Murder in the Hill". But it has disappointed me in every episode. Actually I've personally been expecting much better work from the experienced Anjan Dutt but I'm hurted by this.
Now telling why this is the worst from Anjan Dutt. First the STORY- is a shade copy of Agatha Christie's Crime thriller Novel named "Murder on the Orient Express". In the very first episode I've got this and assume what is gonna be and in the last episode I do appreciate me for my assumption! Jokes apart! Comes to the point, the shade copy story doesn't bother me but the screenplay disappointed me a lot.
The novel was far better compared with the SCRIPT of this film! Yes, the SCREENPLAY is so poor. Characterization does not give me pleasure at all. Maybe this is the first time Anjan Dutt failed to properly write the Screenplay of a film.
Comes to another point which is Filming Location and CINEMATOGRAPHY. Filming Location shows and defines the class and the relation between the Hill and Anjan Dutt like his song Darjeeling and certainly I'm writing this review and listening this song at the same time; LOL! Anyway the CINEMATOGRAPHY is average what i expecting like Anjan Dutt's previous production based on the Hill/Mountain. But the suspicious movement of Camera and the Vertigo effect gives me pleasure to keep the suspense and the searching the reason of a suspicious death, though i guess what is gonna be!
MUSIC, EDITING, SOUND DESIGN was good actually very good. The monotonousness of the screenplay and the demand to end each episode within the limits was totally covered by MUSIC and EDITING.
After all of this, I realize that if Anjan Dutt make a full-length FILM based on the same story was may be good and it's more like Anjan Dutt's Production.

A good web series.. it might seem very simple but as the story goes on the complexity of the story unravel.. there aren't many twists in it ans you might feel that everything looks so easy but as the story goes on you will understand how every action had a reasoning.. a definite one time watch.
Terrible acting, forced plot twists & retarded dialogues
arindamm-529856 November 2021
One of the worst web series I have ever had the misfortune of watching. Monumentally terrible acting from everyone involved, asinine dialogues, abominable camera work, random incidents without any need or reason, forced plot twists - there's really nothing about this series that can be appreciated. I watched it only because it's a murder mystery, but I must admit that I haven't been this let down in a long, long time.
A plot down the hill.
pnk_rnj_das16 September 2021
The choice and sections of the HoiChoi contents are really putting a question. Get high, get inspiration from some famous novels, and create something which is indigestible. Except the shooting location nothing to mention. 2 star as still better than MohMaya.
