You'll root for the shark
kstice-2519522 August 2021
I appreciate the content that Tubi offers for free. It is a streaming service with many quality movies that deserves more attention. As Swim is one of the first movies originally produced by Tubi, I wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't even live up to the standards of a Syfy Channel movie. The only positive comments that can be made are that the movie is fast-paced and that shark movies are always a little fun. This movie makes many mistakes that even a B horror movie shouldn't make. The list of problems in this movie include but are not limited to:

-A 55 year old actor pretending to be a 90 year old

-The lead actress keeps her mouth open for almost the entire film

-Very predictable number and order of deaths

-poor CGI and an unintimidating shark

-Painful dialogue (ex. At one point, an actor explains to the audience the purpose of a flare gun)

-Characters are either unlikeable or poorly developed

With the number of shark movies made each year, you can certainly find a better shark movie than this one. But hey, at least this film is better than Shark Exorcist (2015).

Typical Asylum fare
Shadowking100119 October 2021
This has all the trademarks of The Asylum made movies - bad acting, ridiculous decisions, abnormal physics and bad CGI. So depending on what you are looking for, this could be a fun movie to watch, or one where you spend the entire movie commenting and screaming at the TV. Either way, having some beer close-by seems to be necessary.

Shark? What shark? It looks worse than a figment of the director's imagination.
John_Wagenvoort27 September 2021
Come on guys. This is simply a test of someone's dogged endurance to sit through what must be one of the worst productions I've seen in a long time. There are no spoilers as there are no highlights to reveal. The storm scenes, the treading water then in waist deep water scenes, were enough to do me in. We're at 30min in and even my remote is wanting me to turn this off. Tubi, you then give us a reprieve by going to a commercial break. Not often that one is looking forward to a commercial. Gotta go now. Let me know how it ends. Ah, no don't.

This movie is an insult to humans. We're better than this. The directors should have asked for help. I think an actual shark could've made a better moive. What were they thinking?? They could have just recorded a wall, and it would have been a better movie. Watch ONLY to make fun of it.

bottom of yesterday's barrel comes back to get you
HEFILM24 August 2021
Well, just when the Sy Fy (hate that abbreviation) channel stopped showing and funding these identical and usually terrible monster movies it seems Tubi will take up that awful baton and beat you in the head with it.

This is a real shame as Tubi is one of the best streaming services out there with a wide diverse collection of movies old and new to watch, so when they started doing their own films I had hopes, all of those dashed by this.

This "movie" is from the same folks who made them for Sy Fy, this time the budget is probably a little lower which may be why Sharknardo director Ferrante is only the writer on this one and they went with Fred Olen Ray impersonator Jared Cohen to direct. You might think I'm using this to insult him but Cohen has actually said he aspires to be Olen Ray, so I guess he's succeeded at failing and doing so as boringly as possible over and over again. This isn't even by the numbers directing as many numbers are missing, the way he shoots scenes is identical from one to the next and key things he should show you he just doesn't. Actors expressions change from shot to shot though they are supposed to happening at the same time, it's just a sloppy careless joyless lifeless thing. Forget about talent there is no skill displayed here and for as many times as Cohen has been making a movie he doesn't seem to know what to do or, even worse, was just getting pay check and rushing off to the nearest bar to try to forget it all.

Most of the blame can be laid on his door as there is never a good angle or performance in the whole thing and some of it barely cuts together, no action scene ever builds any tension or excitement and well, what's left to botch when it doesn't deliver any of that. In fairness the script is bad, kind of a let's take the cheapest scenes from Sharknado and make a whole movie around them, but the performances are just dreadful even given the warmed over leftovers from Sharknado's "serious" or "character" moments.

Ok but how are the CGI sharks? Well there's only one of them and it's better than the worst CGI sharks you've seen, but the kills are ineptly done and there aren't many of them.

Terrible sound job and music but the film doesn't deserve any better.

I think with this movie I'd have to say there are more terrible shark movies than almost any other genre. Sad boring day for tubi fans, I'm sure there is more just like this waiting to darken your life.

No Redeeming Qualities
Planet-3811 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I start?

Let's see,

A lousy script with a trope filled plot.

A badly done CGI shark that goes from 5-10 ft in length, depending on the scene.

That a shark this size, does the amount of damage it does; was any research done at all? After the first kill, unless that shark was on some sort of vendetta, I don't see it going to all that trouble.

And speaking of size, how did it get through that tiny hole in the basement?

And, how did the water level reach the ground floor, when the water wasn't that high outside, AND not come under the basement door, even though the water level apparently was high enough for the shark to slam against the door?

People that supposedly frequently spend time at the beach, have no means of handling emergency situations.

All of these people are adults, and supposedly intelligent, but make some of the dumbest decisions possible. For instance, they finally get through to 911, but do the immediately give their information? Nope! They hug and celebrate. I expected them to pop open some beers. Of course they lose the connection when they finally get around to responding to the dispatcher.

This was the first movie that I didn't hurry through what I was doing during the commercials or rewind if I missed anything. It was that bad.

I'm not even sure who the survivors were or how it actually ended, since I was barely paying attention the last 15 minutes or so.

Terrible
christymarie-770343 October 2021
This movie was so awful that I couldn't look away. The acting, "special effects", storyline and writing was on a level of atrocious that I have never seen in film before. I erupted in laughter at many of the attack scenes and found myself shaking my head in frustration at the reasoning of the characters. This movie is now on my list for my Bad Horror Movie Night binges. The entire thing looks like it was made on a budget of $10. It is the worst thing I've ever seen. I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm so amazed at how terrible it was, it seems more like a shark horror parody than anything else.

Bad, bad and bad
phoebebond-0335519 November 2021
Never laughed so much at a horror film in my life!

I wish that I could rate this -1000000

The tiny cartoon shark who changes colour, size and shape?!

The children who look older than the parents?!

A leg being dramatically bitten off and getting left with little tiny bite marks, I've had more blood from a paper cut?!

Trying to kill the shark with a shovel?!

Overall, it's not a horror, a 8 year old could watch this and laugh along.

The longest 2 hours of my life that I'm never getting back... all wasted.

CGI Masterpiece
brandonhibben31 May 2023
You don't get much better than this. If you are looking for fake sharks, fake rain or fake acting, this is your movie. Never has a shark attack been more avoidable but then we wouldn't get to experience the masterpiece that is "swim".

A shark slowly making its way up a flooding house to eat its pray. At no point did they just open the door and leave and I am so glad they didn't.

It is an absolute wonder movies like this get made as they actually cost someone money. Bravo all round. I would like to especially thank Jadon (age 9) for the dialogue. It was an amazing first effort for a young boy with the learning difficulties he has had to overcome.

Good in the context of The Asylum.
doctorsmoothlove24 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Swim" is the generically titled official debut of The Asylum on the streaming app TUBI. Many of the studio's films are already there, and this is the first time TUBI paid to have its own film produced. Fitting choice too. The Asylum produces many creature features and sharks are as popular as ever.

Jared Cohn directs and his experience, increased budget and time allotment make "The Swim" one of the better films the studio has produced recently. I would go so far as to say go out of your way to watch it if you are a shark movie fan.

The plot recalls "Crawl" with a shark getting into the house rather than an alligator. The house in question is a beach house in CA a family is renting from a scumbag. Scumbag won't repair leaky pipes and is properly eaten. Everyone you expect to be attacked is. Those who die are easy to predict though not all victims do. The pleasure in the film is that the studio finally has the money to make the special effects look at least as good as "Deep Blue Sea" did twenty-one years ago.

Cohn drenches his movie in constant rain, a modern variation of the smoke effect often seen in older films. Here it's tied in with the plot. Rising flood water allows a shark to enter the basement, conveniently flooded due to leaky pipes.

The actors are all competent. The film oddly portrays "grandpa" as a retired doctor barely 60 years old. I found it hard to believe that he would have a grandchild entering college. He must have found time for his family and why wouldn't he? The main female actors are constantly in bikinis. The main guy always wears a tight swimsuit too.

Objectively, "Swim" isn't a good film. It is the among the best of a B grade studio whose fans will enjoy it immensely.

Really???
davepolain6418 August 2021
A fun romp similar to other sharky things, but the amount of damage able to be inflicted by a 3 metre (10 foot) shark needs a bit of research.

Swim speed, bite radius blah blah blah.

Always fun though.

So bad it's almost good! .. but it's not really good.
Sobertoaster-764-4795616 December 2021
The acting and CGI is actually pretty funny, so It had some entertainment value from that. There is a fine line where something is SO corny that you think it was done on purpose, I actually think they gave a solid effort to making this which makes it all the more hilarious to me. Unfortunately the comical moments are hardly worth it though, and I found myself bored by the end and couldn't finish the last 15-20 minutes or so.

Miscast bad acting
carolinajasmine13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
None of the actors matched the ages. Example grandfather should have been the dad. The kids seemed much older than parents. Sorry but every scene had the mom with mouth wide up She could have swallowed the shark in a few scenes easily.

The chalenge is...
imdbcom-6996926 August 2021
... to find out what in this movie is not beyond ridiculous or plain stupid, from the script to "acting" to the music to camera work... everything. The stakes are high. It's a total wonder that such a putrid garbage can actually be shot, produced and sold as a movie. Makes one logically questions whether the whole thing is not just a cover up for some other lousy sharky business.

Whisper so the shark don't hear you
darrenk-6121923 August 2021
The mother's acting was worst than the CGI shark, she whispered 75% of the time, the other bad acting was worst than a SYFY channel movie. Grandpa was cool... Have you ever watched a horror movie and root for the villain? Here's your chance.

A highly enjoyable if slightly flawed shark film
kannibalcorpsegrinder17 February 2022
Heading down to a vacation beach house, a family finds the area swarming with inspection problems but are forced to stay due to a massive storm in the area which they soon find a massive shark has gotten trapped in the house with them forcing the family to try to get out of the situation alive.

Overall, this was a fun if problematic entry. One of the stronger factors with this one is the rather enjoyable setup that, utilizing several different plotlines together, manages to generate a pretty thrilling scenario. With the establishing storyline of the unsafe conditions inside the basement that makes it ripe for flooding and the landlord's unwillingness to spend the money to fix it when the family's about to arrive, the discovery of these conditions that distract them long enough to be unable to escape with the rest of the evacuations and the oncoming storm trapping them in the rising water with the shark swimming in the house, this comes off quite fun overall as the struggle to stay alive meshes nicely with the father trying to get to them to have a quite strong setup. With that established, the film has a lot to like with the shark attacks which are cheesy and enjoyable enough. The initial attacks on the landlord and the basement ambush of the repairman start this off nicely with some small, brief attacks which set the stage for the later sequences inside the house. With the water rising and the shark confronting them in numerous strong sequences leading up to the escape from the flooded basement and the eventual confrontation in the living room, the second half comes off much better with a strong slew of scenes featuring the group trying to get out of the water away from the shark circling them leading to some tense encounters and graphic attacks with the victims. With a fun finale offering a similar fun series of chases and encounters with the sharks trying to get them while the family tries to escape, this one comes off quite nicely overall. That said, there are some flaws to be had with this one. One of the biggest issues here is the beginning that focuses on the disasters at the house setting the stage for the ensuing carnage to come. Going through the motions of the various household factors and the trouble with getting everyone together due to the storm gives this one with a proper setup but takes way too long to get going with the cheapskate landlord trying to bribe his way out of the inspection, the family trying to spend time together despite their own issues and the discovery of the faulty structure. It all comes off as too overlong to get to the shark action in this one with these elements, and along with the instances of underwhelming CGI for the settings and the sharks when they're on-screen, all conspire to bring this one down enough.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Graphic Violence.

You're going to need a bigger house
notanaxkiller-107-28791122 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was both comedy, and tragedy. The comedy was the writing. Lines like "Why is there a shark in the house"? The acting wasn't terrible...they all looked sufficiently terrified. The tragedy was the script and the dialogue. They ruined the film. Both totally unbelievable. If they had confined the flood to the bottom floor, they MIGHT have had some kind of credibility. But there WAS a silver lining. Addison Bowman's ass.

Do not watch this sober.
Sleepin_Dragon12 November 2023
A family travel to a dream (nightmare) holiday shack, and get stalked by a psychotic shark.

If you're having a couple of large vodkas, you may just find this amusing enough, you know it's doing to be shocking, it's genuinely worse than that, it's terrible.

The shark itself is an amusing chap, and those CGI special effects belong in the late 1990's.

It is one of those that's so awful, that in a cringey way you will want to watch it, for a morbid curiosity.

Some rudimentary basics are a little confused here, including the ages of the main characters, the mother is to young, and the doddery old father is hilarious, a shame they didn't give him an ear trumpet and a paisley blanket.

When the daughter is screaming our the word shark, nobody else is remotely bothered, the mother is more concerned with her parcel, it's hilarious.

Some of the acting, it's what I can only describe as porn movie acting, personified beautifully by the dishy Mr Randolph, all he needed was a boiler suit.

Jaws fans, do not watch it, you'll weep.

2/10.

Mediocre quality
roy-emerson-jr28 December 2021
Quality very similar to Asylum studios. I don't want to give anything away, but you'll see exactly what I mean. The special effects reminded me of a college audio visual club with a first timer crew making all of the creative decisions. The acting was in peaks and valleys, so don't expect much. I attribute some of that to what was poor script writing and not all the actors depth.
