The legend of "Guru Bob" may be over, as the couple discovers a human finger, bringing new energy and urgency to the story. Peggy's journey to find Donatella is promising, but her path is filled with transient issues in High Desert's cinematic universe. The show has numerous options to trigger, but has remained in its comfort zone, potentially causing it to take more chances and surprise viewers with plot twists. In episode 5 of High Desert, Peggy and Denny successfully retrieve the silver from an older couple's house. They express relief and even call Stewart to assure him mortgages won't be a problem. When the older couple arrives, Denny drops a large chunk of the coins, but they don't have time to retrieve it. They passionately kiss each other before getting into their getaway buggy. In the next scene, the joy of the silver ring is diminished as they receive a fraction of their initial expectations. Peggy decides to give her half to Bruce to keep the business going, citing her desire for a future. Bruce expresses gratitude to Peggy, who reminds him to attend the Pioneertown meeting with Owen. Peggy believes Donatella, Bob's missing wife, is alive, and she reluctantly hands over the assignment to Carol. Carol is disappointed with Peggy's physical behavior with Denny and her previous mistakes. Peggy and Denny plan to catch Bob in the act at Bob's. Denny, an art consultant for a famous artist, tries to convince Peggy to put a bug in Judy's collar to be more discreet. The couple visits Bob's house, where Denny is unhappy with Peggy's "touchy-touchy" relationship with Bob. Denny attempts to convince Bob to confess the painting is fake, but Bob is thrown off by Judy. Bob asks them to take Judy out, and Peggy tries to get her back in. Bob opens up about his wife, Dona, the "Artist behind the fakes." He shares how he became "Guru Bob" 18 months ago when he asked a colleague to smile more without knowing what he was going through. Bob, a man waiting at a taco truck, was shocked by colleagues jumping from the roof, causing him to experience existential trauma. He took a leave of absence and sought psychiatric treatment, which led to hallucinogenic sessions that changed his life. His "television epiphany" took over when he was called back into work, causing a shift in perspective. Bob's changed perspective brought hope to others who had experienced an insert crisis, and his community of followers grew, forming the legend of the "television epiphany." However, Dona left him during this time. Denny plans to open a "qigong center" with Bob, but Peggy insists they leave. Judy swallows a desert item and becomes uncomfortable during the car ride. Peggy is angry and tries to find a new plan to get Bob. Judy vomits and expels a human finger, possibly belonging to Dona, which may be her body barrier in Bob's backyard.
