Interesting horror anthology.
jp_9118 August 2022
"Goe-gi-maen-syon" is a horror anthology set in an old apartment building, the filming locations and art direction provide an unpleasant atmosphere very well done. The cinematography is good without being excellent. The direction is on point for much of the film and the acting is generally good, except for a few overacting actors. The script, which is divided into 4 segments and an epilogue, has its ups and downs.

Segment 1, "The Writer": The first story set in the apartment building is quite soulless and without any tension, the protagonist overreacts in some scenes and the script does not provide an explanation beyond the incongruous facts. A failed segment.

Segment 2, "The Pharmacist": The second segment manages to improve on the first. The story shows an interesting scene in which the pharmacist's boyfriend talks to her from the shower, only to find out later that something is wrong and that her boyfriend really barely comes home. The end result is not entirely satisfactory. In the trailer, scenes from this segment were shown making it look better than it really is.

Segment 3, "The Seller": It is during this third segment that the film begins to improve. The story depicts the bizarre relationship between a real estate guy and a mannequin he treats as his wife. His kitchen sink begins to cause problems that lead the protagonist to think that there is a black hole in there. Without being entirely excellent, this segment is interesting.

Segment 4, "The Student": The last story is the most interesting and best achieved. A young man returns to South Korea after studying abroad, soon becoming a guest of a friend of his in an apartment in the haunted building. His friend seems to have poor hygiene and the apartment is full of mold. The script is quite good and interesting, also the acting of the protagonist is excellent. The best story was left for last.

Epilogue: One more story that serves to tell the reason why the building is haunted. The script has good moments and the suspense is present. Without being a marvel, it manages to entertain.

"Goe-gi-maen-syon" is not a masterpiece, but it manages to hold interest throughout its duration.

IT'S OK.

The terrors presented are not all in the form of figures with horrific scary faces, but supernatural phenomena that disturb the mental. The thing that feels most interesting about this film, the selection of terror for terror, is the plot. In five different horror stories there are detailed plots that connect them. The plot is made in such detail that you will see in one story there are pieces of another story.

Pretty decent
RastaManSam3 March 2022
The Korean/Chinese/Japanese horror films really have a certain feel to them, this one did not disappoint. There were some jump scares here and there, but most were predictable. Still a pretty decent watch but the run time could have been cut down a little.

Pretty good even though the tempo of the film is fairly slow
HafizhMaulana2117 March 2023
A horror story writer did some research into an obsolete apartment building to get a story idea. The apartment building holds a mystery and horror story that has become the fruit of people's lips.

Korean films never give a different and interesting touch in each genre of film. Including horror films that never fail and always give a scary and terrible horror feel. Ghost Mansion provides a unique story in it in one story that is interrelated in it. With the story of a cartoonist who is looking for horror story ideas, Ghost Mansion provides a scary horror story in it as many as five horror stories as a story plot. Each story is able to provide a good horror atmosphere. Although it doesn't bring up many ghosts, the scary impression is still felt. The scary impression refers to the jump scare scene that fits snugly into the storyline. As well as the supportive music of the horror scene. Coupled with the ending of the movie which becomes an unexpected plot twist.

Spooky but not too scary
witra_as27 August 2021
Spooky but not too scary South Korean horror anthology. Jo Ba Reun tried to draw a line between seemingly disjointed stories that happened in Gwanglim. Sadly his bag of tricks became quite predictable and repetitive. Character build-ups weren't solid either.

Good horror anthology...
paul_haakonsen4 December 2022
As I stumbled upon the 2021 South Korean horror movie, of course I opted to sit down and watch it, on account of it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen. And given my fascination with both horror and Asian cinema, of course it was a given to have to watch "Goe-Gi-Maen-Syon" (aka "Ghost Mansion").

Writer and director Jo Ba-Reun actually did a good job here with the small stories and segments. Yeah, this was an anthology, which I wasn't aware of. But the stories are nicely connected to one another and while each story is a stand-alone story, the connections to each other story was just nicely constructed and made for a more wholesome viewing experience. Normally I am not overly keen on horror anthologies, but this one was quite good.

The acting performances in the stories were good and they had a good cast ensemble together for fleshing out the characters and bringing the stories to life.

Visually then "Goe-Gi-Maen-Syon" was quite good. This wasn't a shock and awe inspiring horror anthology, but more of a dark, brooding and slow burning kind, where atmosphere was really important. And they pulled it off nicely, because these stories permeated in dark atmosphere.

I was genuinely entertained by writer and director Jo Ba-Reun's "Goe-Gi-Maen-Syon". And if you enjoy Asian horror cinema, then it is quite worth checking out.

My rating of "Goe-Gi-Maen-Syon" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Not a bad premise, but the director/filmmakers just don't quite seem to put the story together very well...
lathe-of-heaven1 June 2022
I really like Korean Horror films. And, I like stories about haunted places. But, honestly, this one never seems to quite get off the ground. I felt the pacing was a bit amateurish and therefore just not that involving. The characters don't really seem to act in a realistic manner, which also kind of takes you out of the film.

The movie isn't horrible, but in my lowly and wretched opinion, I got the impression that perhaps this first time director just didn't quite know how to present the story in a compelling fashion. Personally, I would ignore the '9' & '10' reviews since all they say is how 'Great' the movie is without really giving a very believable review as to why... I would pay more attention to the lesser reviews the ones who gave this film ratings more along the line of about '6' or so, because at least they struck me as more genuine, and they elaborated as to why they felt this way.

I gave it a '5' because I honestly did not find the movie very interesting or engaging at all. I don't think the 'scares' were staged that well. And, like others have stated, the film seemed to become somewhat repetitive as time went on. And, like I said at the beginning above, I usually really like Korean Horror films, especially about haunted places. But, truthfully, this one just did not do very much for me, so I just wanted to leave a simple review stating my impressions because I feel that the current '6.x' rating is not really indicative of the quality of this film. It's 'Okay' as some here have said, but personally I really wouldn't bother...

Not exactly a classic
Leofwine_draca19 November 2023
GHOST MANSION, as a title, is something of a misnomer; this film is instead set in one of those run-down and haunted apartment complexes so beloved of Asian ghost stories. There are shades of DARK WATER in the location and this is a far cry from the quality of that, but it does offer something else in the shape of an anthology with the wraparound segment featuring a young writer researching some stories. As ever, the stories are a mixed bag, the first about ghost kids being quite poor, but it does improve. The mould story is a ghastly delight and the one about a serial killer really zings. This isn't exactly a classic, but it'll do.

grotesquery with few scares
killercharm9 June 2022
Anthology about the search for the story of the missing tenants at an old, disgusting, mold-infested apartment building called Gwanglim Mansion; it needs to be condemned. It was made for and run by a cult. A webtoon writer moves in to write about the different "rooms" where people lived when they went missing. This is a dark flick with lots of suspense and grotesquery, but few true scares. Plus the story ain't all that.

A solid and creepy if forgettable anthology horror film
drmargis1 April 2023
'Ghost Mansion' is an anthology horror film in five parts tied together by all taking place in a haunted apartment complex, framed by an artist seeking inspiration for his horror comics. It's a solid entry into the anthology horror genre, although don't go in expecting something exceptional or even that memorable.

I guess 'mansion' must mean something different in Korea, because that is definitely an apartment complex. At least 'Ghost Mansion' is a much better title than the inexplicable 'The Night Shift' this movie gets flagged with in some English releases. If you avoided watching this because you thought it would be about a janitor working late nights in some building, fear not; there's not that much janitor content.

Some of the stories are straightforward, while others don't make much sense-which is okay. They may be insubstantial, but they provide plenty of steady, atmospheric build up and legitimately creepy scenes. That's exactly what I wanted out of a random Korean horror movie and I was not disappointed. The artist (or "webtoon artist" as he insists on calling himself, despite the implication that his comics are published in traditional print media) framing device works, and is developed just enough that it sells the "don't go in there" moment that are often so cheesy.

If you just want the kind of slow burn creepiness that Asian horror does so well, but broken up in bite sized chunks, this one is well worth a watch. It's just not particularly interesting or memorable.

6.3/10. Recommended
athanasiosze29 December 2022
Kinda weak beginning, better middle, strong ending.

I was not so sure if i should recommend this movie, but the last 15-20 minutes convinced me to make the recommendation. This is more creepy than scary, more eerie than gory. There are still some good jump scares and horrifying moments but the movie relies more on its creepy atmosphere. There are also some comedic elements, at least there were some scenes that i found them somewhat funny.

As other reviewers mentioned, it's decent. Good actors, well directed. It's not a MUST WATCH movie, but it's slightly better than an average horror movie. At worst, it's watchable.

Decent horror from South Korea
deloudelouvain7 January 2024
Goe-Gi-Maen-Syon (or Ghost Mansion for the English title) is a South Korean horror movie from writer/director Jo Ba-Reun. For his first movie he did rather well. Nice cinematography, like most of the time with South Korean cinema, and a decent horror story although it could have benefited from better explanations. It mostly consists of jump scares and creepy faces. It's effective if you're easily creeped out like my wife for instance. I found it more funny than anything else but credits to the actors that did a good job, especially the ones mimicking the creepy faces. South Korean cinema is one of my favourites. Rarely disappointing, and even if I score this one lower than usual it's still worth a watch if you're into this genre.

MOST UNDERATED AND UPTILL NOW THE EXCELLENT HORROR FILM IN KOREAN FILM INDUSTRY
thatgirlwithyellowboots8 October 2022
SUMMARY: Ji Woo, a webcomic artist, visits the Gwanglim Mansion after hearing the terrifying rumours about that apartment. The apartment's caretaker, a middle-aged guy, describes a few incidents that occurred there. Ji Woo becomes more and more obsessed.

MY VIEWS: This film tops Gonjam Haunted Asylum in quality. I realise that making such a bold statement considering how well acclaimed this Korean horror film is, but as a horror movie enthusiast, I can assure you that this film will not let you down. The narrative is strong because the movie's many scenes make connections. The story of each character shown in the first chapter is told by the middleman throughout the duration of the film's four chapters. The movie becomes really intriguing when the hints for next scenes are shown, since this demonstrates how precisely the plot was crafted and how skilfully the direction was executed. This movie is obsessed in every way. The middleman telling such stories is a very surprising and distinct character. It resembles watching episodes of short horror stories. There is nothing special to talk about the sets, because all the incidents happens in that apartment. I totally loved it! Creative, Engaging and Terrifying.

RECOMMENDATION: I recommend this movie more than 1 time.
