Summaries

  • It's a battle of the burgers as the five remaining chefs strive to create an American classic. In the elimination challenge, the Masters must prepare the perfect meal for an exclusive celebrity lunch thrown by actress and singer-song-writer Zooey Deschanel.—Anonymous

Synopsis

  • Five remain. The Masters arrive in the kitchen to find a table piled high with burgers and fries.

It's Quickfire time. Kelly says it'll be, duh, burgers. She notes that gourmet burgers are big right now and that Hubert Keller has a $5,000 burger on his menu. It's a recall of the season three challenge that C.J. won.

The tasters are Spike Mendelson from season four (and now owner of a DC burger joint), Sang Yoon, winner of the best burger in America, per the "Today" show and Morgan Spurlock, star of the McDonald's bashing documentary "Supersize Me."

Rick remembers judging Spike in season four and him being "audacious."

They have an hour to cook a gourmet burger and a side dish.

Anita is wiped after winning the last challenge but not sleeping well.

Michael starts in on a giant burger. Rick is going with a ribeye burger with three flavors of guacamole. Art is making fried green tomato chips.

Hubert feels pressured because he serves over 1,000 burgers a day. He's making beef and Roquefort with Yukon Gold potatoes. Anita makes cheese soup with bite sized burgers but gets angry at her soup.

As Art finishes in time, he proclaims: "I didn't do this, Jesus did this, because I would have never finished on time."

The quickfire is served. Of Rick's queso fundido burger the eaters say he didn't need all three guacamoles, and Rick's irritated they can't tell they're different. Next up is Art's hoecake burger. Spike says he wouldn't change a thing. Next is Michael's "hamburgese enorme" with truffled potato chips. They call it delicious. Anita freaks out a little as they say her soup tastes like "boiled meat." They like the way Hubert's looks, but the cheese is overpowering. Spike says it lacks "wow" factor. Hubert says people love it at the restaurant.

Kelly presents the scores. Hubert get 3 stars. Art gets 3 1/2. Anita gets 1 1/2 stars. ("Nobody said anything," Hubert says, "I think we could feel pain for her.") Michael gets 4. Rick also gets 4.

Kelly explains the next challenge. They're catering a lunch party for Zooey Deschanel ("500 Days of Summer"). Art smells a rat. She just got back from touring with her band and wants to throw a party.

In a video, she tells them a couple of things they should know. She says she's a vegetarian, which she defines as not eating eggs or dairy either. Vegan, the chefs decode. And she has a few dietary restrictions, she's gluten intolerant and she doesn't eat soy. The chefs are ready to pop.

They're cooking for 20 diners, each one making one course. Art volunteers for dessert. ("Do you want to go home?" Michael scoffs.) They agree on the order and go shopping with a budget of $300 each.

Michael describes the challenge: "Zoey's diet goes like this: Think of the things you like to cook and just say 'no,'" calling it "off-putting." Rick isn't discouraged, his daughter had gluten allergies. Art starts with rice ice cream.

Back at the kitchen, they get cookin'. Rick is making fresh sweet corn tamales over chili braised black beans with braised greens.

Hubert is making a white gazpacho, timbale (food in a cone) of avocado and asparagus and red beet salad.

Anita is making spicy grilled eggplant, lentil salad and cashew sauce.

Michael is making quinoa pasta with salsa verde and pine nut gremolata.

For dessert, Art is making strawberry and champagne soup, strawberry rice ice cream and almond brittle. He's worried about the texture of the rice milk he bought.

Rick's worried because Art's out of his comfort zone.

At the party, Zooey comes back to say hi to the chefs, apologizing for being such a difficult eater. They use their hour to prep. Anita isn't in love with her lentils, which aren't behaving. Michael's having a hard time with his pasta and having to peel it apart noodle by noodle.

The diners sit down at the table and Zooey raves about the show.

As Michael's plating his pasta, the entire table his dishes are on starts to go, but Hubert comes over and saves him. As Hubert's sending out his food, he warns the waiters to keep the plate level so the small shot glass of white gazpacho doesn't tip. Naturally, one bites it. And then another - but he has two back-ups.

The diners like the gazpacho, but not the salad. Anita is next. Zooey thinks the eggplant is a little oily and some of Zooey's friends think the eggplant is over-seasoned. Then Michael with his quinoa pasta, which Gael's never heard of. But he cooked it perfectly. Zooey announces she wants to hug him. Zooey thinks Rick's tamales are the best she's ever had. Then Art with his dessert. Zooey says she's had better vegan ice cream with coconut milk.

    Then it's scoring time.

Zooey was thrilled just to not be eating raw vegetables.

Critics' Table The critics rave to Hubert for his gazpacho. Jay calls it "an entertaining curtain-raiser to an intriguing lunch."

James Oseland tells Anita he was a little taken aback by her oily eggplant, but she explains she soaked it in oil over night intentionally. Gael says the plate was a little "sad looking" because it was one color.

James says Michael's dish seemed confident.

Jay calls Rick's tamales a "true delight," but James thought it was a bit "ungangly."

Gael was disappointed in the rice ice cream. Jay asks him if it's fair to not make the central part of the dish, but Art explains he didn't see the point in trying to make something he's not confident in.

    The masters go wait.

The critics were generally impressed in how the masters dealt with the vegan challenge. James is still stuck on the "soggy" eggplant. "It is not rocket science to grill an eggplant," he says. They particularly enjoyed Michael's, but are stuck on the idea that the pasta was store bought.

In the back, Rick says there's nothing wrong with buying the pasta.

Kelly asks Jay to explain why Michael can buy pasta but Art shouldn't buy ice cream. He says it's because restaurants make their own. But they liked his brittle. They've reached their decisions.

Verdict time. (Also known as "Watch Famous Chefs Try to Do Arithmetic in Their Heads.") Hubert, Michael and Rick have the highest scores. Hubert got 4 from the diners and a total of 19. Michael got 4 1/2 from the diners and a total of 22 (including 5 from Gael). Rick got 3 1/2 from the diners and a total 19.

Michael's the winner for the week and wins $10,000 for Clinic Ole. Those three head back to the kitchen.

Anita and Art remain. Anita got 2 1/2 from the diners and a total of 13 (hurt by the 1 1/2 from the Quickfire). Art got 3 stars (to add to his 3 1/2), Jay gives him 1 1/2 for buying the ice cream. His total is 12 1/2. By half a star, he's out.

Kelly tells Art it's not going to be the same without him there. "I lost because I made a decision that wasn't favorable to the judges," he says. "It was a great experience, and I'll miss it."
