  [1100 raises her hand again]

  66-16 : [with his hand raised, too]  Sir, was it Lady Number 2 the Great?

  [the kids laugh, and 1955 whacks him on the head] 

  6 : Who is Number 1?

  1955 : [the kids all raise their hands]  Ah. The oldest question in Village history. Go on, 1100, you tell him.

  1100 : There is no Number 1. There never has been and there never will be. The concept of the Number 2 is an act of humility. The title reminds us that we are all public servants. Even Number 2. No one is Number 1.

• 6 : So, tell me the kind of work you've been doing so far.

  [looking at a student's workbook] 

  6 : What do you got there, 66-16?

  66-16 : My mother goes to yoga on Tuesdays. She hasn't missed one in the last 23 weeks. Then she missed one. That's suspicious.

  6 : Maybe it's just she wasn't feeling well. What do you have there, 1100?

  1100 : My birthday presents. Long-distance speech recording device.

  6 : Uh-huh.

  1100 : And a mobile person tracker.

  6 : Very nice.

  1100 : Sir, have you worked with the latest roach cam technology?

  6 : Uh, no, I have not.

  1100 : You drill a hole or plant it on a suspect, on their clothes or in their skin, so you can observe them 24/7.

  6 : Well, you certainly all have skills. You're smart. So here's your new task. Find out who we're working for. What do they want? What are they up to? What's their secret?

• 2 : I would have liked 6 to be in the tunnels for a while longer. You did extremely well. You wouldn't go against your parents like my son disobeyed me, would you? 1100?

  1100 : No, sir.

  2 : [having discovered a roach cam in his wall]  Now, was this you? Don't... no, don't turn away. This hole is exactly at your head height.

  1100 : It could have been one of the other kids.

  2 : But it was you, wasn't it?

  [a little reluctantly, she nods] 

  2 : We're going to have to send you for treatment, aren't we?

  [she nods again] 

  2 : It's all right, you can finish your ice cream first.
